Writer ends with tragic last chapter
Hunter S. Thompson, a
writer best known for his work
“Fear and Loathing in Las
Vegas,” died on Saturday, Feb.
. 19 of an apparent self-inflicted
gunshot wound to the head.
Long before his chronicle
of Vegas’ Mint 400, Thompson
was a sports writer for the
armed forces. After his honor
able discharge, he was picked
up by various small sjports
magazines.
His keen grasp of the
English language eventu
ally led to his strenuous
employment by Rolling Stone
Magazine, which published
many of his epic stories from
Vegas, the Kentucky Derby,
the Super Bowl, campaign
trails and his fortified com
pound in Colorado. Before
his death he was a regular
contributor to espn.com’s
Page 2.
Thompson’s legacy will
live on. The man had his
own style, which included
using himself in his stories.
He delved into the pool of
sports, politics, humor, sex
and drugs with unmatched
talent and insight. That was
the epitome of “gonzo” jour
nalism, a selfless degradation
for the sake of the truth in a
story.
It is a shame we can’t
read his thoughts on his own
death.
