Irish-American poet, writer and translator Carlos
Reyes read selected poems last Wednesday in Rook Hall’s
Literary Arts Cehter to a captive audience reduced to
standing room only.
The former PSU professor and poetry reviewer .for
Willamette Week was a finalist for the Oregon Book
Awards in 1996 for his book of poetry “A Suitcase Full of
Crows.” His most recent book, “At the Edge of the
Western Wave,” was a finalist for the 2002 National Poetry
Series.
Reyes chose to read “A Love Poem for Karen” as his
first selection, befitting of his pending nuptials slated foi
August
Throughout the reading, Reyes shared anecdotes to set
the stage for his works and demonstrate how some of his
ideas came to fruition. His poems were poignant, humor
ous, multi-cultural and well received by attendees.
Though Reyes resides in Portland, he frequently visits
his late 18th century cottage in Ireland and enjoys travel to
Ecuador, Cuba, Greece and Spain.
