10 • T he C lackamas P rint S ports I A pril 21, 20(1 Kauffman, Sprauer shine at Cougar Invitational Frank Jordan T he C lackamas P rint Clackamas athletes won eight individual events and two relays last weekend at the Cougar Invitational held at the Clackamas track. Kasey Kauffman uncorked a throw of 218-07 in the men’s ham­ mer, a personal best and the best throw in the NWAACC this season. It is also one of the best throws in the nation for junior college athletes, according to Head Coach Jack Kegg. Other highlights of the meet included John Butkey winning the men’s 1500 with a time of 4:10.42; the men’s 4x100 relay team shaving two seconds off of their season-best time, finishing second to Lane CC; thé men’s 4x400 relay team winning their race, while the Clackamas “B” team finishing second and Troy Sexton and Brian Bernard finishing 1-2 in the 110 hurdles, each with per­ sonal record times: Sexton in 14.93 and Bernard in 15.33. “Kauffman’s throw was unreal; it was definitely the highlight of the day for the men. Casey also ran two strong relay legs, with our fastest split time in the 4x400 (49.8),’-’ said Kegg. “The men’s 4x100 ran their best race of the year, putting pressure on a strong Lane team. If they keep improving, the regionals may get interesting.” On the women’s side, Nicole Sprauer threw the hammer 157-05, getting within three inches of the school record. Jetina Byrd improved three seconds over last week in the 400 hurdles, winning the event wit time of 1:05.84. Kerby Boucl qualified for the NWAACCs wit throw of 36-11.5 in the women’s s put and Bouchee also threw a s son’s-best in the hammer, tossing iron 121-09. “The women competed real w Nicole [Sprauer] had a great day herself; her personal record in hammer, throwing it 11 feet fan than she ever had before,” said Ke “Kerby [Bouchee] also had hersel fine day, qualifying for NWAACCs in the shot and throw the hammer exceptionally well.” The Cougar track teams will « pete in the Western Twilight meet Monmouth, Ore. on Friday and ti el to Eugene on Saturday to comp in the Oregon. Invitational. The Clackamas track team hosted a number of events on April 1 7 at the CCC Open. Between the men’s and women’s teams, Clackamas was able to win eight indi­ vidual events as well as two relays.
