Gillaspie tosses perfect game as
softball finishes regular season

The Clackamas softball team
ended the Northwest Athletic
Association of Community
College’s (NWAACC) season on
an up note, winning four out of six
games to end the regular season
with a 32-14 record and second
place in the Southern Division of
the NWAACC.
“We are real happy and very
excited about the NWAACC tour
nament,” said Head Coach Paul
Fiskum. “We have a good chance
to do some great things.”
The Cougars week began with a
single game Monday against
Southwestern Oregon CC, and
Casey Lapp threw perhaps her best
game of die season, allowing only
two hits in a 1-0 shutout win.
“Casey kept SWOCC off balance
the whole game, mixing her pitch
es really well,” said Fiskum. “We
got a clutch RBI single from Nikki
Staley in the bottom of the eighth
inning, with Brea Makin scoring
the winning run.”
Tuesday, Clackamas faced
S WOCC in a doubleheader on the
Cougar diamond. Miranda
Gillaspie threw the first perfect
game by a Cougar pitcher in nine
years, highlighting the Cougars’
first game 7-0 win. Gillaspie had
nine strikeouts, while allowing no
one to reach base the entire game.
Erin Murphy supplied the offen
sive punch, slamming two home
runs and driving in three runs.
The two home runs were not only
the first two HR’s of the season for
Murphy, but the first two dingers
of her college career.
Game two against Southwestern
Oregon was ova* quickly, with the
Cougars batting around for 10 runs
in the first inning, enroute to a 14-
0 whipping. Makin was the hitting
star, going 4-4 at the plate.
Vanessa Holm scattered five hits,
striking out four and allowing no
walks in tossing the shutout.
Thursday, Clackamas took on
Chemeketa CC and with a skele
ton lineup in place due to three
starters being injured, CCC lost to
the team from Salem by a score of
3-0.
“Our trainers were concerned
with the injuries to our three
starters, so they ordered those girls
held out, and it showed,” Fiskum
said. “We had to play one of our
pitchers in the outfield, the first
time all season that she had to play
out there, in order to field a lineup.
And face a pitcher who was voted
the Most Valuable Player in the
conference last year. But we
played well, and the girls played
real hard. It was all you could ask
of them.”
Friday, CCC took on Centralia
CC and pounded their opponent
into submission, blasting Centralia
in the first game of a twinbill 21-0.
Erin Murphy hit two long home
runs, including a grand slam, and
drove in seven runs on the day.
Lindsay Burke supplied some
power of her own, hitting a home
run, and everyone else in the line
up had at least one hit during die
game.
Gillaspie continued her domi
nance of late, tossing her second
consecutive no-hitter and allowed
only two walks, on “questionable
calls by the home plate umpire,”
according to Coach Fiskum.
‘Miranda is absolutely on fire as
of late, and it came at the right
time, with the tournament coming
up”
A fluke thing occurred in the sec
ond game. Clackamas followed
up their first game thrashing with a
second game loss,B-2.
“We hit every pitch on the button
in that second game, unfortunately
all of our hits found their gloves,”
Fiskum said. “(Vanessa) Holm
threw a terrific game, striking out
11, walking no one and allowing
only five hits, but we committed
an error which opened the door for
them, and it cost us.”
In the final regular season game,
Clackamas took on their cross
town rivals from Mt Hood CC,
and the Cougar
women took it to the
Saints, beating them
8-0.
Gillaspie capped off
an outstanding sea
son, throwing a one-
hitter through five
innings, then Holm
pitched the final two
innings, allowing two
hits.
Morgan
Huffstetter, a first
baseman from
Canby, singled in
the first and second
innings, driving in
three runs, while
Burke had a two-
RBI knock in the -
fifth and Murphy
