The softball team won four
out of six games last week,
losing only to the team no one
can seem to beat—Lower
Columbia Community College.
The team that seems unstop
pable has a 25-1 record in the
NWAACC conference, includ
ing an undefeated record
against CCC of 6-0.
“They have the best hitting
and pitching of any team
we’ve seen all year,” said CCC
Coach Paul Fiskum. “They
beat us six in a row; my hat’s
off to them.”
Tuesday, April 31, the
Cougars lost game one of the
doubleheader 4-1. Game 2 was
a tragic loss of 7-2.
“Both games were o.k. for a
while,” said Fiskum. “They
had a couple of big hits that
hurt us.”
Outfielder Kelsey Bisbing
had the only run in game one
and Cathy Lawrence, first
base, hit a single in the fourth
inning of game two for two
RBI’s with the bases loaded.

Later in the week, the ladies
were able to pull two wins
from the JV team of Linfield
University. In game one,
Miranda Gillaspie, freshman,
pitched a winning game of 4-2
with eight strikeouts. Out of
10 hits, the Cougars cranked
four runs.
“It was nice to get the LCC
taste out of our mouth,” said
Fiskum.
Game two proved just as
successful, an 8-4 win with
eight runs on 12 hits. Casey
Lapp, sophomore, threw four
strikeouts, allowed six hits,
and two walks. Catcher Carla
Lillis hit three RBIs.
“Over all we were a little
flat after the LCC game,”
said Fiskum. Lillis, was three
for three in game two, hitting
her third home-run of the
year.
Friday, May 3 gave the
Cougars two more wins.
Chemeketa Community
College lost both games 11-5
and 2-1.
“We had great hits up and
down the line up,” said
Fiskum. Brooke Comstock,
Nikki Staley, Breu Makin
and Bisbing all had multiple
hits in game one. Gillaspie
threw six strikeouts while
struggling with a horrible
mound.
In game two, Vanessa Holm
competed pitch for pitch with
Chemeketa’s pitcher in extra
innings. She had six strike
outs and held them to only
one run off of six hits. Erin
Murphy, shortstop, singled in
Comstock for the game-win
ning run with two outs.
“She (Holm) really delivered
tough pitches when she need
ed to,” said Fiskum. “We’ve
been really good in extra
innings this year, which is a
really good sign.”
The Cougars remain in sec
ond place in the NWAACC
standings under Lower
Columbia Community
College. Fiskum says he looks
forward to seeing them in the
NWAACC tournament, with
hopes to give them much
more competition.
