Two students nominated for USA Today award

Vern Duncan showed the en­
tourage from CCC around the
senate floor. Duncan is an
acquaintance of the President "Joe"
Johnson.
“That was an extra treat,”
said Hepting. “We were in an
area that was all roped off.
None of the other students
got to go there.”
Besides making the extra
tour possible, the Clackamas
administration did a great job,
said Hepting. “They took the
time to make it an extra-spe­
cial day,” she said. “They rep­
resented Clackamas very
well.”
Hazen was impressed by
Kitzhaber’s laid-back attitude.
“The people who intro­
duced him to us were really
formal,” Hazen said. “But he
walked in smiling, cracked a
few jokes, and he made every­
one feel at home.
“I was a little intimidated by
the whole prospect (of meet­
ing the governor) at first,” she
added. “But it felt really good
to be honored like that.”
The women, who will both
graduate this spring, were
nominated to represent
Clackamas by their academic
advisors. Besides having high
GPAs, each student is in­
volved with activities outside

with two Clackamas students
April 12 at a reception held to
honor their academic achieve­
ments. Karissa Hazen and
Cynthia Hepting, who were
the college’s nominees for the
National Academic Team, had
a luncheon with other Oregon
nominees and received
plaques from Kitzhaber.

presidents introduced their
students, and a few students
gave speeches.
“It was great to hear about
other students and their ac­
complishments,”
said
Hepting. “I wish we could
have heard from everyone, but
time wouldn’t allow for that.”
