Cougar baseball tied
for second in division
ELENA BORYSKA
Sports Editor
The Cougar baseball team has
been really busy, playing eight
games in less than a week-and-a-
half, with Clackamas coming out on
top in half of those contests.
The first home games of this
season were played March 30, on
the much-improved Cougar dia
mond.
The first game of the double
header was a 5-0 shutout by the
Cougars. Brandon Gleich was the
winning pitcher, throwing a com
plete nine-inning game.
Game 2 of the doubleheader was
a lot more suspenseful, with the
score tied going into the bottom of
the seventh inning. Matt Paulsen
came through in two clutch situa
tions: he went to the mound in the
top of the seventh to strike out
three batters, and then proceeded
to hit an RBI double to win the
game in the bottom of the inning.
He was credited with all three Cou
gar RBIs, as well as being the win
ning pitcher in the 3-2 victory.
The Cougars then split a double
header with the Saints of Mt. Hood
on April 2. The first game ended
with Clackamas coming up short
in a 6-4 loss. They came back to
take the second one with a final
score of 4-2 behind Paulsen, who
threw a complete game for the Cou
gars.
The next opponent that
Clackamas faced was Chemeketa,
which played on Cougar territory
April 4. Though the weather was
great, the Cougars played less than
par, getting swept in the double
header, 9-6 and 2-1.
After getting their heads handed
to them by Chemeketa, the Cou
gars worked hard in their next out
ing to regain what they had lost.
On April 6, the Cougar men took
on Linn-Benton and made off with
one of two games. The first game
was a blowout victory for
Clackamas, 10-2. Paulsen contin
ued to be a lucky charm for the
Cougars, as this win improved his
record to 5-1. Unfortunately for the
Cougs, Linn-Benton was able to
even out the series by winning the
second game, 8-5.
After these games, Clackamas’
record was 4-4 in league games, and
7-9 overall. This puts them tied for
second in the Southern Division
of the Northwest Athletic Asso
ciation of Community Colleges.
The next doubleheader the Cou
gars played was on Tuesday, April
9, at Lane CC. Results were unavail
able at press time.
