The Clackamas women’s bas
ketball team was hard at work over
Christmas break, going 7-1 and
winning the 16-team Grossmont
Tournament in San Diego, Calif.
They finished the preseason with
a 12-2 record and began their
league play last week at home, tak
ing on both Mt. Hood and Lane
Community Colleges.
On Wednesday, Mt. Hood came
to the Randall Gym and was
soundly beaten by the Cougars,
79-517. Kayla Steen was the lead
ing Cougar scorer with 21 points
and five assists. Cappie Smith had
15 points, Melissa Gibson had 12
and Jessica Heslop grabbed 10 re
bounds and four steals.
After starting league play with
such a convincing win, the Cou
gars took on Lane on Saturday. The
Cougars started out with a pretty
good first half, but finished with
what may have been their best half
af the season so far. Their above-
iverage second half was enough
.o lead them to an 88-62 win. Steen
was the statistical leader once
again, with 21 points, 12 rebounds
and eight assists. Regina Joo

Jessica Hansen (left) and Jennie Kooch (right) double-team a Mt. Hood player during a 24-
point home victory. The Cougars were 2-0 in their first week of league play after an
impressive 12-2 preseason record.
’ '
had 15 points and seven rebounds
and Lena Grant scored 14. Smith
also had 12 points and Gibson had
11.
While the Cougars have done
well so far, they aren’t without
weaknesses. One of the things
that Head Coach Jim Martineau is
going to try to get his team to work
Clackamas wrestling gets ready to rumble
on is their consistency and get
ting them to play hard for 40 min
utes. They are going to need to do
that this week, since it may be their
hardest week of the year. On Wed.,
Jan. 16, Clackamas will be heading
to Roseburg to battle the top-
ranked team in the NWAACCs,
Umpqua Community College.
While it is a big game for the Cou
gars, it is also a big game for
Umpqua. At the Grossmont Tour
nament, Umpqua lost to Santa Ana
in the semifinals, while CCC beat
Santa Ana in the championship
game, so both teams have seen
each other play. Martineau just
wants to make sure his team is
ready to go.
“At this point in the season, it’s
still just another league game,” said
Martineau. “It won’t be the end of
the world if we go down there and
get beaten. If we go down and play
hard, I think we’re going to be
fine.”
Since this is such a tough
match-up of two talented teams,
Martineau knows that some of the
Cougars may be a little jittery.
“Being a little nervous is okay,”
said Martineau. “(But) I don’t want
them to be at the point where
they’re so nervous that they can’t
go out and execute things as well.”

Hughes (174 lbs.) each came in
fourth in their weight classes.
The Cougars will be at home
on Jan. 18, taking on Highline
Community College, who they
have already lost to once this sea
son. Part of the reason for their
loss may have been due to the fact
