Remember but move on
Since the terrible tragedy of
Sept. 11, Americans have let ter
ror run their lives. I understand
that all of us, American born and
citizens alike, have been deeply
affected by this atrocious act of
evil, but we are
doing what the
terrorists want.
We are letting
them win by not
moving on and
doing the ev
eryday mun
dane things that
not long ago we
took
for
granted.
I understand that we all need
to grieve for the lives lost: the
people we knew and did not, and
yet still grieve for because they
were just like us. I am not asking
for people to forget because I
could not even do that. I am ask
ing for us to continue working,
playing, doing the things we love
and yet remaining vigilant to the
possibilities of what is possible
of happening because it did.
We have learned a great many
things from this calamity. We
have learned we are not as
unsusceptible as we would like
to believe. We have learned that
we are closer than we imagined.
Unfortunately, there are some
things I wish the American
ning. Drew Barrymore was to
perform on the “Late Show” and
came to New York only for those
mere moments and hopped a
plane immediately following the
taping. Movies that had any
type of terrorism plots have
been held to be re-released at a
later time or scrapped all to
gether.
We are not standing tall; we
are not uniting. I am seeing a
country of people that I was so

11/2/01:
LOS ANGELES-Officials
received “credible evidence” that
terrorists may be targeting four
California bridges, including the
Golden Gate Bridge.
WASHINGTON, D.C.--More than
170 postal workers in Missouri
began preventive antibiotics after
anthrax spores were found in
Kansas City.
PORTLAND-The federal
government is testing Portland’s
main post office for anthrax
contamination.
WASHINGTON, D.C.- The
Most people probably don’t know
this, but we’ve already lost the war
on terrorism. The ultimate goal of
those individuals behind the hei
nous attacks on America was to
destroy America and all that we
stood for. They have succeeded.
In direct violation of the Posse
Comitatus Act, federalized National
Guard troops now inhabit airports
across the nation. As if the sight of
a grocery clerk brandishing an as
sault rifle would deter someone
who is willing to fly an airliner
into a skyscraper for the greater
glory of Islam.
The new cabinet post of Home
land Security in another time, in a
Soviet Union that no longer exists,
was called “Internal Security.” Un
der another regime it was known and
feared as the Gestapo. All three have
in common that, under the auspices
of keeping the citizens of their re
spective nations safe, they sought
out and “detained” undesirables
and enemies of the state.
As a result of the Anti-Terrorism
Bill, law enforcement now has
unprecedented power to tap
phones, read e-mail and search pre
mises without the presence of the
occupant. So long Fourth Amend
ment, it was nice while you were
here.
The panic created on Sept. 11
caused the contemptibly timid
American populace to clamor for the
government to do “something.”
Had they stopped to think (a prac
tice that has long been out of style
in this country) they would have
realized that there was nothing to
be done. When you live in a coun
try that has open borders, eventu
ally some nutcase is going to get in
and wreak a little havoc. That’s the
risk you take for having the free
dom of open borders.
However, the politicians, ever
mindful of opinion polls, decided to
give the people what they wanted,
vengeance. All that they needed to
do was identify a likely country, pref
erably one that wouldn’t put up too
much of a fight (dead soldiers make
politicians very unpopular) but was
different enough from us that we
wouldn’t feel bad about killing a
bunch of them. Afghanistan was
perfect, as we had been its ally dur
ing its war with the Soviet Union.
Their harboring of Osama bin
Laden would sound treacherous
enough that no one would protest
bombing them. And so the war
was on.
Our vast armada went forth to do
battle in defense of democracy, free
dom and liberty. But it was too late,
as these few terrorists have accom
plished what Hitler’s Germany,
Hirohito’s Japan, the Soviet Union,
and even the Democrats and The
Republicans could not: They’ve
turned America into a police state.
To the Editor:
I am writing in response to
the ad featured in the Oct. 31,
2001, issue of The Print. On
page 14, you show an ad for
The Print itself, featuring a
naked woman scantily covered
with issues of The Print and
the headline, “You know you
want it.” I am appalled that a
publication serving an institu
tion of higher learning would
ever think this is appropriate.
It is disrespectful to readers of
both genders.
This type of advertisement
uses the objectification of
women to sell a product. It is
demeaning to all female stu
dents and all female staff mem
bers. The Clackamas Print
states it “aims to report the
news in an honest, professional
manner,” but then uses a very
unprofessional manner to ad
vertise itself. Hopefully, the
newspaper staff will agree that
this type of advertisement is
not appropriate for a college
newspaper and learn from this
incident.
