Steel Magnolias tugs at heart strings

Girls, if you are looking for a
good place to take your date, this
is hot it, I tried. If you are looking
for something with action, this is
not it. However, if you are looking
for an emotional experience, than
this is your ticket. Robert Harling’s
Steel Magnolias is a humorous, and
heartwarming story of friendship
and love among six small-town
women.
The entire play takes place in
Truvy’s (Cheryl Draney) salon
where the women talk of town gos
sip and the wedding of Shelby
Eatenton-Latcherie, played by
Amy Schnell. Throughout the dif
ferent scenes, the audience
watches as different characters
develop in friendship and hardship.
The play starts with Shelby hav
ing her hair done for her wedding.
Right away the cast introduces
comedy with Shelby’s mother,
M’lynn Eatenton, played by
Yvonne Ingram, entering the stage
with typical mother-daughter
squabbles. Each of them throws
funny sarcastic remarks with the
help of the rest of the cast.
Perhaps the funniest character
of all is the colorful Ouiser, played
by Christine Quinlan. Ouiser is an
old shrewd lady who has been in a
“bad mood for the last forty years”,
and she lets everyone know it.
After Shelby’s wedding, the
story turns to wintertime and she
announces her pregnancy to her
small-town friends - all of who are
happy with the exception of her
mother. Shelby has a medical con
dition that puts her in harms way if
she has children, but Shelby wants
nothing more than to have kids,
and what Shelby wants, Shelby
gets.
Ingram does a wonderful job
showing a mother’s worries and
fears, and creates an emotional
scene in the ending that brings
some to tears.
Though the laughter rolls with
humorous snide remarks, charac
ters also broaden their roles and
heartache starts to take its toll. To
say what happens next would be
cheating you of a chance to see a
well-known play such as Steel
Magnolias.
The admission is $4.00 for stu
dents, $7.00 for non-students and
senior citizens are free. You can
see Steel Magnolias May 31 -June
2 at 8 p.m. and June 3, at 2:30 p.m.
in the McLoughlin Hall Theatre.
