Four players named all-conference
Softball finishes third at NWAACC tourney
11 players return for
next year s team

Staff Writer
The softball team finished the
season last weekend at the
NWAACC championship tourna
ment with two wins and two
losses, coming nome with no tro
phies but proud hearts from their
coaches.
“I was really proud of the kids;
we played really well,” said Coach
Fiskum.
There were 12 teams participat
ing in the tournament and the two
top teams were Lower Columbia
Community College and Mt. Hood
Community College. Both teams
have been challenged and beat by
the Cougars this season. Last Sat
urday was not one of those times.
In game one of the NWAACC
tournament, Clackamas chal
lenged Wenatchee Community
College and finished with a 6-0
win.
Vanessa Holm
threw a shutout allowing only two
hits, throwing three strikeouts and
allowing one walk.
Lindsey O’Byrne and Cathy
Lawrence were both two for three
at the plate.
The Cougars received their first
loss, 4-3, against Edmonds Com
munity College who was ranked
number two in the Coaches poll.
The game winning run was caused
by a lost fly ball in the sun.
“That was a real gut wrenching
loss,” said Fiskum. The team had
15 minutes to gather themselves
and move to another field to play
game three against Big Bend Com
munity College where they got
their second win of the day, 2-0.
Casey Lapp threw a five hit, four
strikeout and zero walk shutout.
She also had five base hits.
O’Byrne had a base hit in the
first inning and Nicole Staley hit a
double sending O’Byrne home. In
the second inning Melissa Borde
hit another double, then Erin
Murphy hitting a single to bring in
Borde.
Game four was their final defeat
for the year. Mt. Hood, who took
second overall at the tournament,
won 2-1.
“I think fatigue was the biggest
factor of the loss,” said Fiskum.
The team started practice at 7:30
a.m. and didn’t end play until 6:30
p.m.
Staley hit a double and Darcy
Hertel singled her in.
“We were a very good team, we
just had some bad luck. It has been
the story of our season,” said Fis
kum. “I am awful excited about next
year. I am really proud of the girls
and a lot of them are returning.”
The Cougars can look forward
to seeing 11 players return next
year.
“We are also looking at some re
ally good high school |dds,” said
Fiskum.

ond Team All-Conference as an

Pressure on
track teams
this weekend
at NWAACC
championship
ELENA BORYSKA
Staff Writer
The NWAACC track champi
onships will be held Thursday
and Friday, May 24 and 25, in Spo
kane. This has been a great year
for the Clackamas track teams.
An area of concern is the men’s
track team. Last weekend, at the
Southern Region Championships,
the men came in second place.
According to coach Jack Kegg, If
they can pull together as a team
and do as well as they are capable
of, these men should do very well
at the championships.
In the women’s pole vault,
Becky Holliday is the favorite, al
ready setting and breaking the
national junior college record sev
eral times throughout the year. If
Holliday can clear anything higher
than 14 ft., she will hold another
record and most likely take first
place in the pole vault.
Marcus Cooper has lead the
conference in the long jump a few
times this year, so look for a big
performance out of him.
In the throws, Cory Loebl and
Krystal Schneider have had some
excellent performances this year.
Both of them are expected to place
high in the discus and shot put.
The relay teams have been very
strong in the track program this
year. If team members keep up
their hard work and run smart, the
Cougars should place very high
in this event.
The men and women’s track
teams have already shown how
talented they can be but the pres
sure is on this week.
