jects, ranging from chemistry to

Math and computer science are
offered in Streeter Hall, and ac
counting and business are offered
in McLoughlin, room 134.
A common misconception, ac
cording to Hazen Jette, monitor
lin the math/science lab, is that
you need an appointment to get
help orto use the computers. You
do not have to register, or fill out
any paper-work, to get help from
the math or computer tutors;
they are available in Streeter Hall
Mon. through Sat.
“People learn in several differ
ent ways and sometimes don’t
get information from lectures,”
said Jette. “The student tutors
know what to expect, because
they have recently gone through
the classes and they know the
different questions that they will
have.”
For all subjects, you may have
a private tutor or be helped in
small groups, if you prefer. Stop
by the tutor services office, at
CC127 near the counseling de
partment, and look on the board
for tutor availability. You may
also leave an application for a
tutor not listed on the board.
Tutors are also available at the

campuses, as well as on-line, at
http://dept.clackamas.cc.or.us/tutbf.
Although on-line tutors are pri
marily for distance learning stu
dents, all students may use their
services. Tutors will answer on
line questions within 24 hours,
even on the weekends. The sub
jects of math and science are cur
rently available.
“I think it gives a safe harbor
for people to have someone to
support them,” said Paul
Southwick, math tutor.
All student tutors go through
training and are recommended by
instructors. If you are interested
in helping others, it pays $8.96
per hour and may earn work ex
perience credits. Although most
tutors are education majors, any
one is welcome.
“I’m a tutor for three rea
sons,” said Southwick. “One, I
like to help people. Two, I get
to reinforce what I already

paid good money for it.”

tor, drop by the tutorial ser
vices office and look on the
bulletin board of tutor names.
To become a tutor contact Don
Shula, tutor coordinator, at 503-

Observatory set to re-open in November
CONTRIBUTED BY THE ELC
The 50 ton crane (above) took 10 hours to hoist the
16,000 pound deck into place at the Haggart
Observatory last week. The crane services were
donated by Coast Crane. Many services and
contributions have been donated to cover the cost
of this massive renovation. $1.5,000 is still needed.
John Swigert, ELC groundskeeper, left, does a jig in
celebration of the deck being mounted upon the
observatory structure. The observatory has been
shut down for more than two years for repairs and
renovations.
Lidieth Cecibiano from San Jose, Costa Rica works her way
ground the buffet offered at the luncheon. When asked about
Clackamas Community College she said "it is big and clean and
the people are very nice and kind."
The Costa Ricans visited campus yesterday and spoke with
many of the Spanish classes. They will be in Portland for four
weeks.
