Memorial Day, a tradition to be honored
MAGGIE JIRASEK

Memorial Day, observed on the
last Monday in May in most of the
United States, is one of America’s
noblest traditions. It is a day where
we remember and honor fellow citi
zens who have died on fields of
battle across America and around
the world and, who have lost their
lives to protect America’s interest.
More than 1.3 million men and
women have laid down their lives in
the name of freedom.

is Waterloo, a small village in New
York, where in 1865 Henry C. Welles,
a druggist, said at a social gathering
that honor should be shown to the
dead of the Civil War by decorating
their graves. Townspeople adopted
the idea wholeheartedly. The village
was decorated with flags at half-mast
and draped with evergreen boughs.
Wreathes, crosses and bouquets
were made for each veteran’s grave.
The oificial recognition of Memo
rial Day was first given by General
John A. Logan, first commander of
the Grand Army of the Republic, on
May 5,1865, exactly two years after
Waterloo’s first observance. The
holiday, originally known as ‘Deco
ration Day’, was observed on May
30 until 1971, when most states
changed their holiday schedule.
Con federate
Memorial Day, formerly a legal holi
day in many southern states, is still
observed on the fourth Monday in
April in Alabama, the last Monday
in April in Mississippi, and April 26
in Florida and Georgia. It is a holi
day marked by parades, memorial
speeches and ceremonies, and the
decoration of graves with flowers
and flags.
