ASG attends conference in Washington D.C.

Contributing Writer
Spring break is over; that
means back to school for all of
us. My spring break was a suc
cess and I believe it was also a
success for you, the students of
Clackamas Community College.
As you may remember I, with
four others from Clackamas, re
cently went to the American Stu
dent Association of Community
Colleges (ASACC) conference in
Washington D.C.
I feel we did a great job repre
senting the values and things
that affect Clackamas students
everyday. We accomplished a lot
during our time in Washington.
I attended all sections of the
workshops and got a lot of valu
able information that helped me
talk to our senators about the
things that matter most to you,
things like increasing the Pell
Grants from $3,300 to $3,700 and
increasing the amount of the
Childcare grants that CCC stu
dents and students from across
Oregon receive.
While in Washington, I was
able to see what other commu
nity colleges were doing to help
students on their campuses. I
mixed with people from Connecti
cut, California, Oregon and Utah,
to name just a few.
The conference was not just
about working. It was also about
exploring our nation's capital and
the history behind every door

and space. It was about having
fun and excitement, while learn
ing at the same time, in my opin
ion. When you really want to know
what’s going on at your school and
what your student government is
doing for you, just ask me and any
one who is a member of the Asso
ciated Student Government (ASG)-
they will tell you all that’s happen
ing.
Next year, I plan to push to in
crease the Pell Grant again so that
students don’t have to go into debt
by taking loans. I want students
to have the same chance I had for
my education.
So, the next time the student
government tries to help you out,
applaud them for their efforts be
cause they are not just here for the
tuition waiver; they are here be
cause they care deeply for your
success.
