college is again offering Spanish
for Employees classes for all staff,

The ELC is
looking for enthusiastic, dedicated

Fiddler on the Roof, the Clacka
mas Drama Department’s fall pro
duction, has been canceled.
According to David Smith-En
glish; theater director and instruc
tor, too few individuals auditioned
to adequately cast the play.
“It just didn’t happen,” said
Smith-English.
Keeping his chin up, Smith-En
glish would like to thank Lonnie
Cline, choir director, and Gary
Nelson, music department chair, for
their time and preparation devoted
to a play that will not go on.
In place of Fiddler, Smith-En-
glish will produce Henrik Ibsen’s
1879 play, Doll House. He de
scribes the play as “early feminist;
a play which explores the role that
women have been assigned in soci
ety.”
“When this play was first pro
duced,” Smith-English added to his
commentary, “it created riots.”
In 1879, the term “women’s
rights” wasn’t even in existence.
Ibsen was the first to touch the topic,
yet in response he explained: “I
have been more the poet and less
the social philosopher. My task,”
Ibsen wrote in commentary, “has
been the description of humanity.”
Auditions for Doll House were
held last Tuesday, and according to
Smith-English, the show will go on.
Inherit the Wind will be the pro
duction for winter term. It is a
play “set around the [Scopes] Mon
key Trial,” said Smith-English.
The well known conflict is labeled
a “courtroom drama,” which has
been a very popular and entertain
ing style of theater.
Originally, Fiddler to be pro
duced Spring Term, but instead The
Frogs by Aristophanes will run.
Though the cancellation of Fiddler
has disappointed many, performing
The Frogs in its place is “a good
idea,” said Strauss, assistant direc
tor to Smith-English, explaining
that after the heavy subjects dealt
with in Doll House and Inherit the
Wind, The Frogs will be “an upbeat
way to end the season.”
