Opinion: Women’s
Weekend great fun
KARIN REDSTON
Feature Editor
Last spring I had the opportunity
to attend the annually held
Focus On Women's Get-Away Week
end. I was encouraged to go and
went as Assistant Opinion Editor to
cover it. I never got around to writ
ing that opinion until now.
With the 1997 Focus On Women's
Get-Away-Weekend approaching
starting April 25, I must comment on
my experiences of last year.
Expecting institutional food, I was
surprised and greatly pleased to see
the meals were well thought out and
really good. The staff at Camp Collins
outdid themselves in hospitality to
the participants that were there.
The concert by the band
Motherlode was incredible. It evoked
a lot of feelings from the audience,
all the way from laughter to tears.
The band took the time throughout
the weekend to put on workshops
including singing, learning different
musical instruments and even play
ing the harmonica.
Massages were offered at seven dob
lars for a half hour. Massage work
shops were offeredlfes was a body
movement workshop'
An art workshops was led by
Susanna Lundgren, who made vari
ous art modes available to weekend
participants. I finally came out from
behind my camera long enough to try
the art. Writing workshops were of
fered and were filled to capacity.
On Saturday night there was a per
formance of everything we learned,
and a dance followed. After that some
of us got together and attempted to
sing campfire songs ... the ones we
could remember, that is.
That weekend last year was one I
will always remember. I encourage any
woman who wants to experience the
outdoors, go hiking, bird watching,
writing in a beautiful setting and learn
a bit of massage as well as have fun
with art, to sign up for this weekend.
It is a chance to relax, let someone do
the cooking for you and if you're mar
ried, have your partner deal with the
kids and pets for the weekend.
Coordinators of the 1996 Women's Getaway Weekend relax after a successful
event. From left are Kate Gray, Linda Vogt, Rene' Zingaretli, Marilynne
Keyser, Bernie Nolan and Maggie Pedersen. This year's coordinator group
also includes Ellen Wolfson and Linda Durham (not pictured).
