Last weekend the track team went
their separate ways as they competed
at two different meets.
Some team members went to the
University of Oregon Invitational and
the rest competed in the Mt. Hood Re
lays held in Gresham.
At the Invitational everyone placed
well. Bill Jones set a school record
when he placed third in the pole vault
with a distance of 16’4.75”.
Travis Armstrong, team captain,
placed seventh in the 1500 meter run
with a time of 3:49.8. His time was
number three on Clackamas' all time
list, and he set a personal record by 5.5
seconds. In the history of Northwest
Athletic Association of Community
Colleges (NWAACC) this is only the
fourth time someone has broken the
time of 3:50.
“Travis Armstrong’s time was in
credible. It was a significant achieve
ment," said Head Coach Mike Hodges.
Also in the 1500-meter run, Andy
Bradley set a personal record by two
and a half seconds, with a time of
3:59.10.
On the women’s team, Tristan Sharp
placed second in the Javelin with a
throw of 137’5”.
In the 10,000-meter run Jennifer Rea
placed eighth at 38:49.93. Her time
set a personal record by 55 seconds,
and made number three on the all time
list.
“Jennifer Rea’s improvement by 55
seconds is significant, and that’s an
improvement of over two seconds a
lap,” said Coach Hodges.
Women’s Team Captain, Kendel
White placed fifth in the 800 meter with
a time of 2:17.87. Her time placed her
at number two on the all time list.
White missed the school record by only
thirteen hundredths of a second.
"Kendel White’s 800 was outstand
ing," said Hodges.
Evan Goin set a personal record by
20 seconds in the men’s 10,000-meter
run with a time of 32:45.9.
In the 400 meter, Dante Betha placed
second with a time of49.83. Betha also
placed fourth in the 200 meter with a
time of 22:02.
Clackamas earned three first places
at the Mt. Hood Relays. The women
placed fifth, and the men placed sixth.
Jaimee Brown took first place in the
high jump with a distance of 5’ 1 ”. Her
distance helped her to achieve a quali
fying mark and tied her for number six
on the all time list.
In the pole vault, Kari Davidson
placed first with a personal record of
8’.
The women’s sprint medley placed
first with a time of 1:55.21. The race
was a total of 800 meters and is run in
increments of: 100,100,200, and 400.
The team consisted of Lareina Cota,
Amanda Bradley, Jaimee Brown and
Michelle Wimberley.
The women’s relay team also placed
fourth in the 100 meter. They earned a
qualifying mark, and number 11 on the
all time list with a time of 50.66 sec
onds. This was the group’s first meet
together as a relay team.

The Portland Winter Hawks' '96-
'97 season came to an abrupt end two
weeks ago when the first place
Hawks were eliminated in game six
of the first round of playoffs by the
Prince George Cougars.
Finishing first in the Western di
vision with the opportunity to meet
the sixth place finishers would seem
like an easy feat for many teams. The
Winter Hawks were well aware that
the task would not be an easy one
this post season. Behind the solid
play of goaltender Chris Mason, the
Cougars were able to win every regu
lar season game against the Hawks
on their ice, a claim no other team
can make.
The Hawks jumped out to a great
start in game one, beating the Cou
gars 5-3 in the Memorial Coliseum.
The Hawks were dealt a devastating
blow in that game when defenseman
Joey Tetarenko was victim of a
checking from behind penalty, which
resulted in a knee injury that would
keep him out for the remainder of the
series.
The Cougars went on to win the
next three games in a row, and an
eventual series victory in game six.
The 96-97 season has come to a
bittersweet end, but the Hawks are
already preparing for what they hope
will be an even stronger 97-98 sea
son.

Kristi Chamberlen placed second in
the shot put. Her distance of 40’5.25”
is a season's best. Chamberlen was also
third in the hammer throw at 112’8”
and fifth in discus at 117”9”.
In the men’s javelin, Heath Fisher
placed third and set a personal record
of 187’7”. Scott Hein placed fourth
and set a season's best record in the
javelin with a distance 187’7”.
Shawn Davis placed second in the
hammer at 161’2” and fourth in the shot
put at 46’1.5”.
In the pole vault Vasili Tsirimiagos
placed third at a distance of 13’6”. Phil
Elie placed fifth at a distance of 12’6”.

Chad McIntyre placed sixth in the
110-meter hurdles. He earned a quali
fying mark with a time of 15.55 sec
onds.
In the men’s sprint medley Chad
McIntyre, Drew Evansen, Dave Lee
and Jaw Hawkey placed sixth with a
time of 3:49.6. The 1600-meter run
went in increments of: 200,200,400,
and 800.
In the 800-meter relay, the men
placed six. Chad McIntyre, Drew
Evansen, Mark Gibson and Phil Elie
ran the race in 1:32.64.
On Friday, the teams will compete
in a meet at Lane Community College.
On Saturday, they will participate in
the Cherry Blossom Relays at
Willamette University.

The track team
split this past
weekend to
compete in the
University of
Oregon
Invitiational and
the Mt. Hood
Relays.
The Clackamas racquetball club
offers a competitive environment for
racquetball enthusiasts.
The club is for all experience lev
els and is geared for competitive
tournament play. Each term, team
members participate in at least one
open tournament with other local
community colleges.
“This term we hope to get
Chemeketa and/or Mt. Hood to come
here for a tournament,” said Coach
Kathie Woods.
Members can also participate in
weekly Oregon Racquetball Associa
tion competitions held around the
state. The ORA is open for players
of all ages and runs year around. The
tournaments are split into four
classes and include upwards of 300
KinderCare
in tournament. Competition includes
singles and pairs.
“Right now it is early in the term.
We are just sending a couple of play
ers,” said Woods. “Many previous
Clackamas students are still participat
ing in the ORA tournaments.”
The majority of the club members
are in a class offered by Clackamas at
East Side Athletic Club in Milwaukie
on Monday, Wednesday and Friday
from 8 to 9 a.m. The class is one credit
and there is a $35 fee to Eastside Ath
letic. Non-class members may partici
pate in the competitions. Two to three
players join the team in tournaments
each term who are not in the class.
Woods noted, “It [Eastside] is a
good facility and a great opportunity”
for students to learn and compete in
racquetball.
