County needs new officials

The upcoming May 21 elec
tion will include two county com
missioner positions. We have an
opportunity to choose a
new County Commisioner
and District Attorney.
Mark E. Luedtke is
the best candidate for #3.
Luetdke is running
against incumbent Demo
crat Ed Lindquist and Re
publicans Mac Sumner
and Jerry Grisham.
Clackamas needs
someone who isn’t a long
time politician. Luedtke
is a retired logger who has
not held any political po
sition, but has the experience of
attending most of the weekly
County Commissioner meetings
over the last two years. This cre
ates a balance that I find very im
portant. While he hasn’t been
corrupted by power, he has seen
how politics work from the view
point of an average Oregonian.
His main objective is to lower
local taxes and control County
spending. In the Oregon Specta
tor he is quoted as saying “These
people (current County Commis
sioners) never saw a tax that they
didn’t like.” I feel that we need
to balance the budget and I think
that Luedtke can get us started on
that track.
In the District Attorney elec
tion we have a chance to choose
a candidate who will crack down
on crime in Clackamas County.
Terry Gustafson seems to be
voter’s best bet Gustafson is run
ning against current District At-
tomey John S. Foote.
She has worked as
Clackamas County deputy and se-
nior deputy district attorney from
1981-96 and has been an instruc
tor at a community college for 13
years. She notes that only 4% of
the criminal cases go to trial in
Clackamas County and intends to
increase this number if elected.
Her record includes having got
ten “guilty as charged” verdicts
on 97% of her cases while a pros
ecuting attorney. Her record
speaks about, what she feels is im
portant. In the voter’s pam
phlet Foote and Gustafson
are side-by-side and have
the same space. While
Gustafson talks about her
experience, Foote goes on
and on about endorsements.
While the endorsements
show what other politicians
think, I want to know what
a candidate has actually
done and Gustafson is will
ing to let her past speak for
her.
This month we have a
chance to take control of our
county by electing politicians who
will lower the deficit and reduce
crime. If Luedtke and Gustafson
win, I feel they will at least make
the first real steps toward these
goals.
