Baseball takes three of four from Linn-Benton CC

Practice has paid off for the Cougar baseball team lately as they won four and lost
two over the past week. Clackamas will take on Chemeketa at home in a
doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The Clackamas Baseball
team went 3-1 against Linn-
Benton Community College over
the weekend in taking sole pos­
session of second place in the
Northwest Athletic Association of
Community Colleges Southern
Division (NWAACC).
The Cougars split two home
games with the Roadrunners on
Sunday, winning the first game 4-
3, and losing the second game, 8-
6 in extra innings.
A squeeze bunt attempt in the
bottom of the ninth inning won
the first game for Clackamas.
George Dearborn pitched seven
strong innings and Allan Coyle
came in during the final innings
and picked up the win.
Steve Geiszler, Brian Itami
and Justin Henderson each had
two hits in the win.
Itami hit a bases-loaded triple
in the second game that scored
three, but the Cougars still went
down to defeat. Tyson Vermillion
led Clackamas with three hits and
Geizler added two singles.
On Saturday, Clackamas
swept Linn-Benton in Albany, 11-
5 and 7-3.
In the first game, Jeremy
Palki and Coyle combined for
the win on the mound. Geiszler
went four and five and
Henderson three for three.
Steve Fournier scored three
runs in the winning effort.
Pitcher Jayson Obermiller
picked up the win in the sec­
ond game with Coyle coming
in to get the save. Geiszler
went two for three to finish the
day at six for eight.
The Cougars defeated
Linfield’s junior varsity team
last Thursday, 2-0, on a two-
run home run by Boone
McGuckin. McGuckin went
three for three at the plate for
the day.
On May 3, Clackamas lost
to Chemeketa at home, 7-5.
The Chiefs out-hit the Cougars
ten to three.
The Cougars played at
Lane CC in Eugene on Tues­
day, and will play Chemeketa
at home in a doubleheader on
Saturday at 1 p.m.
Clackamas will travel to
Gresham next Tuesday to take
on Mount Hood CC at 3 p.m.
The Cougars will play at South-
western Oregon CC on May 18.
Clackamas softball looks strong near end
of season, prepares for regional tourney

The Cougar Softbal 1 team
swept a doubleheader at home
against Pierce Community Col­
lege on Sunday, winning the first
game 8-0 and taking the second
matchup 3-0. Clackamas im­
proved their recprd to 19-3 in go­
ing 4-0 last week.
Brenda Ruppel threw a three-
hit shutout and collected the win
in the first game.
The Cougars
scored two runs in
the first inning and
one run in the second
inning.
Michelle Kolbo
led Clackamas in hit­
ting in going two for
three with three
RBIs. Rachel Kidder
went two for four, with three runs,
and two bases stolen. Third
baseman Danielle Madigan went
two for three with one RBI.
Madigan has been hitting well in
the past few weeks.
In the second game, Candee
Stanley had a one-hit shutout in
leading Clackamas to the victory
in her sixth consecutive league
appearance. Brandi Kamrath
scored on a wild pitch and
Michelle Kolbo hit a two-run
single. Catcher Tracey Scharer
got a rare start behind the plate
for the Cougars, drawing praise
from Cougar coach Paul Fiskum.
On May 2, due to wet condi­
tions and an earlier rainout at
home, Clackamas played a
doubleheader against
Green River Community
College in Hood
River. The Cou­
gars defeated the
Gators, 13-1 and
11-2.
Both
games went five
innings.
Ruppel threw
four solid in­
nings in the first game and gave
up only two hits. Alicia Scott, also
known as Pee-Wee to her team­
mates, went two for four with one
single, a double and one run
scored. Maja Wirkkla went one
for three. She scored two runs and
had two RBI’s. Korrine Wellin
went one for three with two RBIs,
with one double in the first inning
knocking in two runs. Eight of the
nine starters had a base hit.
Stanley threw two innings in
the second game. Dawn Beard
finished up the game on the
mound for Clackamas. Scharer
led the Cougars in hitting, going
two for three, scoring two runs
and one RBI. Holly Lorenz went
one for three with two RBIs.
Fiskum was pleased with the hit­
ting of the day and the excellent
defense the Cougars
showed.
Clackamas will
travel to Longview to­
day to play Lower Co­
lumbia College at 3
p.m. The Cougars will
also be on the road Fri­
day when they head to
Coos Bay to take on Southwest­
ern Oregon CC in a 1 p.m.
matchup.
The Northwest Athletic As­
sociation of Community Colleges
(NWAACC) Tournament will be
held at Portland’s Irv Lind Park
on May 19-20.
