Girl with Lantern, 1904
(Interpretation of painting
by Helen Turner)
Misty thoughts of dreams
on this heavy afternoon
catch a girl
standing alone
in a garden.
The sun seeks her out
through thick layers
of shade tree
while her summer hat wraps
around china skin
forming a halo of
protection.
Blue dress shimmering
in yellow noon
creates a reflection
of heavenly white.
The sound of breathing,
a bee buzzing,
and the dim murmur
of kitchen life
are the only disturbances
in her complacent
world.
Suspended in time
and distanced
by social obligations
her precious blue veneer
remains impeccable.
She is motionless
caressing a delicate
Japanese lantern.
Her hand gently,
cautiously, poised
to enter into it’s
world, penetrating
the vulnerable
perfection. .

The greatest gift I’ve lost
Oh, what a cost
My love no longer able to express
maybe I’m on a test
In all your grace
I’m stuck in a windy place
