Hodges declares Webber 'Hero of the Meet'

Team unity is important to
Head Coach Mike Hodges and his
track & field teams. The teams
showed their unity with a strong
showing at the Mt. Hood Relays at
Lewis & Clark College on Satur
day.
The men’s squad won
the eleven-team meet with 128
points followed by Clark with 86
and Bellevue with 84. The women
held off Bellevue for first place
with 1 lOpoints. Bellevue followed
with 82 and Mt. Hood had 76. The
Cougars also won the Co-Ed com
bined title with 238 points.
Bellevue took second with 168.
Hodges explained that
the men have won that meet five
years in a row and six of the last
seven years. The women have won
two out of the last three and
Clackamas has won the co-ed title
for the last four years straight.
Hodges also said that the
meet was set up in a format en
tirely different from regular track
meets. The hurdles were the only
events ran as individual events,
but the field events were all run
the same.
Hodges said that this
meet is a good catapult for the rest
of the season because it helps bring
the team together as a whole and
builds a lot of unity, which is
important for such a large group.
Hodges explained that
depth has been an important as
pect in his teams’ success through
out the season and it showed again
Saturday. Both teams managed to
score in every event held.
Maury Webber was de
clared the “Hero of the Meet” by
Hodges after he passed and out-
sprinted his competitorfrom Clark
in leading the 4 X 1600m team to
a win. “He ignited the excitement
of the team,” said Hodges.
Thrower Kris Long came out of a
small slump with two impressive
wins in the hammer and the shot
put.Long threw 154 feet, lOinches
in the hammer and 48-61/2 in the
shot put..
Craig Connors tied his
personal record with a 15' 6 "
effort in the pole vault. Dave Is
land took an easy win in the jav
elin with a throw of 194-6. Evan
Vuksich took second and had a
p.r. in the triple jump at 44-7 3/4.
Ryan Clay reached eighth place
on the all-time 110 meters hurdles
list with a p.r. and a time of 15.1
seconds.
The men’s 4 x 800 relay
team of Adam West (1:57.2),
Kevin Bartholomae (1:58.54),Leo
Sanders (1:57.75), and Brian
Buckingham (2:01.74) ran away
with an easy win in a time of
7:55.4. Hodges was impressed with
Leo Sanders two 800meter legs in
the distance medley and the 4 x
800relay. Adam West helped lead
the men’s team to two impressive
wins with 800 meter legs, in the 4
x 800 and the distance medley.
The women’s team also
had some strong wins at Saturday ’ s
meet. Hodges said that the
women’s strength was in the
throwing events where Meredith
Case and Karissa Skarberg took
second and third in the discus and
shot put, respectively. Kami Sisk
took first in the 100m hurdles with
a season’s best of 15.4 seconds.
The women’s 4 x 200
team ran away with first in a time
of 1:49.3. That team was led by
Krisite Preiskom, who ran the
200 in 25.01 seconds. Hodges said
that the 4 x 800 team of Preiskorn
(2:29.35>, Wendy Johnson
(2:24.68), Cindy Keene (2:28.68),
and Elizabeth Ribbeck (2:32.7)
showed“a very fine performance.”
Hodges said that within
the next week or so, the teams will
begin to work on less distance and
more shorter runs to prepare for
the regional 'championships in
mid-May. Both teams will travel
to Vancouver on Saturday where
they will compete in a ten-team
invitational at Hudson’s Bay High
School. Hodges expects the meet
to be a big battle with his teams
facing their top rivals, Lane and
Clark.
