The first round of the
1993 NFL playoffs was a week of
defensive battles and offensive
surges.
The Kansas City Chiefs
were visited by the Barry Foster-
less Pittsburgh Steelers andplayed
a great overtime game ending on
a Nick Lowery field goal sending
the Chiefs on the road to Houston
next week. The big question: will
Joe Montana be healthy and agile
enough to take snaps under center
and throw effectively against a
defense who is fighting everyone
lately, including its own offensive
coordinator?
The Vikings and Giants
played a defensive battle wot by
the legs of Rodney Hampton, who
had the game of his life.
Minnesota's offense was hurt by
poor receiving and a strong pass
rush by the Giants defensive line.
Even with gutty play by Jim
McMahon, they couldn’t over-
comedropped passes andaswarm-
ing giants “D.”;
The Giants travel to San
Francisco , next week to play the
offensive-oriented 49’ers.
The Pack is back. Green
Bay defeated the Detroit Lions
and the only question I have is,
what is the league’s single season
reception record holder doing so
wide open at the closing minutes
ofaplayoffgame? Sterling Sharpe
proved, in my opinion, to be the
most clutch receiver in the NFL,
but for the Pack plan to keep play
ing, the defense must play up to
one of the leaguers best all-around
offensive teams. The Cowboys
host Green Bay next week.
Despite the strong play
of John Elway, the Broncos still
play defense like a great team, I
mean a great high school team.
The Hoss threw through the
Bronco D like it was not even
there. The Raider’s offense had
the best showing all season, but if
the defense that played the first
half of the Bronco game shows up
in Buffalo, expect a long off-sea
son for the silver and black.
On the other hand, if the
second-half “D” shows up, the
Raiders could spoil the Bills fourth
consecutive trip to the big show.
Can the Raiders win in the post
season in Buffalo?
More than likely Art Shell
will be losing sleep over the 51-3
loss the last time they made the
flight in January to Buffalo.

In a battle of big cats,
theCougars’ men’s basketball
team defeated the Portland
Community College Panthers
107-74 in a league match up
Jan. 5.
From the opening
jump the Cougars, 10-2, were
all over the Panthers. Kyle
Dixon once again proved that
he is the best point guard in the
league with an impressive per
formance. Dixon capped the
first half with a 'spectacular
dunk to give the Cougars a 60-
30 halftime lead.
The Panthers found
themselves turning the ball
over, due to defensive plays by
the Cougars. Whenever the
Panthers passed the ball, it
seemed a Cougar would end up
with.it some way or another.

sity level of the Cougars was
just too much for PCC to
handle.
Travis Orrick put
PCC’s hopes down as he con
nected often from 3-point land.
Orrick also had many solid de
fensive plays. Dixon and Stahl
penetrated the Panther defense
while Orrick and Joe Bierbraur
controlled the perimeter.
“Our defense let down
in the second half. We could
have had better rebounding.”
said Head Coach Royce Kiser.
The team will work on those
things and transition in prac
tice this week. “They are hard
working and that is why they
are winning,” Kiser said.
The attendance level
for basketball games has been
down this year. Kiser said he
would like to see more students
supporting this winning team.
