B £ 'Team teaching' to begin in fall Ford and Mount will experiment with new method by Melissa Freels Co-Editor-in-Chief Two instructors at Clacka mas will experiment with a new. method of teaching in the fall—a method called “team teaching.? Psychology Instructor Loren Ford and English Instructor David Mount will be coordinating a Writing 121 Course and a Psy chology 101 course in an effort to pull people together and possibly make the courses more valuable to students. “It’s an opportunity to get to know more people better/’ Ford explained. According to Ford, students in his psychology course do a lot of writing - personal journals that include much introspection. Sometimes these journals are lengthy and by requiring students to take Mount’s course, they will receive advice on how to im prove their journals. One objective of the coordi nated courses is to “provide a specific context in which writing has direct application to a per son’s life,” Ford said. He calls this “interdisciplinary training” — in other words, students will learn to read and write more ef fectively while they study psy chology. By taking these two courses, students will be able to fulfill some of their assignments for Writing 121 with what they do in psychology class. “Pulling people together” is one of the main aspects of “team teaching,” he said. Students will have the opportunity to be to gether for two courses, and in effect, students will get to know each other better. welcomed the idea of “team teach ing.” When Ford and Mount introduced this idea to their stu dents, the “initial student response was positive,” Ford said. Students who plan to take part in this “project” should sign up for the Ford’s Psychology 101 course, which will be held at noon on Monday, Wednesday and Fri day. Students should also sign up for Mount’s Writing 121 course, which is held at 1 p.m., immedi One objective of the coordinated courses is to "provide a specific context in which writing has direct application to a per son's life." —Loren Ford Psychology instructor “Team teaching” also pro vides a chance for instructors in different departments to get to know each other better. So far, the college’s staff has ately following Ford’s class. Ford emphasized the fact that Writing 121 placement is man datory for students who choose to take the two courses. Student chapter calls quits by Claudia Smulders Staff Writer Every term, technical writ ing students have a chance to get their articles published in the Columbia River Student Chap ter, which is a chapter of the Society for Technical Commu nication. But due to lack of participa tion, the Columbia River Stu dent Chapter recently disbanded. It all started several years ago when STC came up to Loretta Matulich,Writing 227 instructor at Clackamas, and asked her if she wanted to write an article for the chapter. After it got pub lished, Michelle Perry Sailer, resident of STC, gave Matulich application forms for her stu dents and since then, students have been giving articles to send in to STC every term. By getting their articles published, students benefit in two ways. They get extra credit for it, but the most important reason is that it goes in their portfolio, so if they are looking for a job, their resume looks good. STC consists of a student chapter, a chapter for teachers and everyone else whois inter ested in technical writing. In the STC meetings for the students they cover subjects like Save 10% on our vacation spots. Daytona Beach it ain’t. But stopping at Shurgard on your way home this summer is a lot more fun than hauling your bundt cake pans and limegreen Barcalounger all over the country and back. Plus with the 10 percent student discount, you get to see for yourself how higher mathematics can indeed be applied to real life situations. The teacher chapters dis cuss different aspects of techni cal writing, like computers, graph ics, resumesand the latest tents in technical writing. In Matulich’s opinion, tech nical writing is: "one of the fast est growing fields in academia.” The example Matulich gave with this quote was the story about one of her students. Her major was computer account ing, and was looking for a job before she graduated from Clackamas. She had a job inter view in a computer store and mentioned that she had taken a technical writing course. The man said that when she would gradu ate from Clackamas she could get a job with him right away, because she had taken the tech nical writing course. 'Preppy Week' features CCC; writer visits grade school by Staci Smith Staff Writer On May 25,1 was involved in a presentation about Clacka mas Community College at To bias Elementary School in Aloha. The presentation was a part of the sixth graders' “Preppy Week.” Several of the sixth-grad ers have pen pals at various col leges, and during "Preppy Week" those colleges who have pen pals send representives to Tobias to speak on their behalf. Job Specialist Sheri Schoen- born had asked me to accompany her to Tobias for the presenta tion, and since I had always wondered what it would be like to be in front of the class, I said yes. When Sheri and I arrived at Tobias we carried our supplies into a classroom. Ten minutes after our arrival, the room was full of 48 antsy sixth-graders. Sheri began with a slide presentation that profiled Clacka mas. After the slide show we had a question and answer session. I couldn’t believe how many questions the kids had! They asked about everything from having a job while in school, to how to go about being a doctor. I never really realized how interested in educa tion kids really are until I heard all the thoughtful questions they asked. I am really glad I was able to be apart of "Preppy Week." I was able to play a small part in the educating of a future generation.
