Pg. 6 The Clackamas Print Entertainment March 10, 1993 Capitol Records' newly released CDs are success Poison, NATIVE TONGUE Before Poison released Native Tongue, frontman for the group, Bret Michaels, described the sessions for the album by saying “the natives are restless.” He wasn’t kidding, and now they’ve been let loose with the release ofthe album. Native Tongue is a powerful album where Poison focuses on some new elements while keeping many of the old. “We’ve always concentrated heavily on songs. That has always been, and still is the focus,” said Bobby Dall (bass). The album contains 15 songs, and each one has its own distinct rhythm and melody. Many of the songs are soulful with some bluesy style to them. This is a good album where the band performs very well together. It’s obvious that they work hard to make their music come together the way that it does. DURAN RICHIE KOTZEN BRET MICHAELS X RIKKI ROCKETT , BOBBY DALL □URAN Duran Duran, DURAN DURAN Duran Duran is back with yet another album and the band, for the most part, is still the same. Simon Le Bon (lead vocals), John Taylor (bass) and Nick Rhodes (keyboards) have all been together since 1980. The only change is Warren Cuc- curullo, who has been playing guitar for the band since 1989, and has been working with the band since 1986. Duran Duran, the self-titled album, is the band’s ninth, and a majority of the songs were recorded in the living room of Cuccurullo’s London home. To date, Duran Duran has sold more than 20 million albums and played at least 1,000 concerts around the world. When the single “Ordinary World” was released it immediately moved into, the Top 20, becoming the album’s first hit and continuing the group’s flourishing career. The modem-rock sounds of this album are traditional of Duran Duran, with some slower and more mellow songs than the group’s past works. Duran Duran fans won’t be disappointed by this most recent release. Bob Seger, SMOKIN’ OJP.’S In celebration of Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band’s 25th anniversary as recording artists, Capitol Records recently released four of the group’s earliest albums, bringing the total Seger Compact Disc releases to 13. CD reissues of Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man, Smokin’ O.P.’s, Mongrel and Seven are specially-priced and are available now. Smokin’ O.P.’s was originally released in 1972, and includes the hit single “If I were a carpenter” and also “Love the one you’re with.” Seger is known for his raspy vocals. Seger’s blues-influenced rock ‘n’ roll never grows old. You can’t help but move to the excellent guitar sounds of Michael “Monk” Bruce and drums by David Teegarden on “Bo Diddley.” These guys are great! Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band made great sounds in 1972 and they continue to do so today. Seger is currently writing songs and recording preliminary tracks with The Silver Bullet Band members. Joe Cocker, NIGHT CALLS Someone once said about Joe Cocker, that “when he sings, Cocker lacerates his own heart and soul with the urgency of a rock ‘n’ roll Van Gogh ... once he’s sung a song, it’s been sung.” Cocker has been called a musical legend, and once more, he proves himself with his latest release, Night Calls. Night Calls opens with “Feels Like Forever,” the album’s first single, and the theme song for the motion picture “The Cutting Edge.” * “I never seem to stray that far from the blues,” said Cocker about his style. Concentrating on that specialty since 1969, Cocker has released 17 albums and has had nine top-40 charting singles. Cocker's biggest hit thus far came in 1982 with "Up Where We 'Belong," a duet he did with Jennifer Wames that was the love theme from "An Officer and a Gentleman." The hit stayed at number one for four weeks and helped Cocker win the 1982 Grammy for Best Performance by a Duo or a Group With Vocal. Night Calls is formed in Cocker’s incomparable style, and is a truly enjoyable album. Cocker’s raspy, growling vocals are a distinct sound that go right along with his bluesy Style.
