Pg, 6 The Clackamas Print Opinion Kudos for President Bill Clinton by Robert A. Hibberd Co-Editor-ih-Chief Kudos to our new Com- mander-in-Chief Bill Clinton for being the most forward-thinking and progressive president that America has had in several years. Kudos for pulling the “gag-rule” that had handicapped family coun selors and kudos for allowing gays to preserve the same American freedom that allows them to be gay. I served in the military, and although I am not gay, I served with a gay man while in Korea. He was in the infantry squad that I patrolled the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ)with. At first, I was a bit apprehensive because I had never worked this closely with a gay man before. Then, I realized that I had nothing to worry about be cause the Uniformed Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) had al ready covered all the bases. I knew that if he ever tried any thing, (a thought that I would later consider absurd) I only would have to report the sexual harass ment to my chain of command. But when we got into the actual patrolling of the DMZ, I realized that the entire idea of judging a soldier based on his sexual orientation was ridiculous. When you are out there in harms way, you don’t have time to think aboutsex. The only worry on my mind was “how are we, as a squad, going to stay out of trouble?” The only worry was “how are we going to do our job as soldiers?” We were a team, no one thought about sexual variation. If we have faith in the lead- os of “America’s finest” and faith in their ability to uphold UCMJ, then we should have no fear about allowing gays into the military. The only real worry we should haveis that it’s one less excuse to stay out of the military if Amer ica were to ever re-enact the draft Thank you Bill Clinton for revoking the “gag-rule” and al lowing counselors to discuss abor tion as a safe and legal alterna tive to pregnancy. Whether you are pro-choice or anti-choice, the fact is that abortion is an element of our society which empowers women. Without abortion, women are easily oppressed by domi nant men, doomed to live out their lives as barefoot, pregnant housewives. Not to mention people's negative image of single mothers. It looks as if America is fi nally exiting the stone age and entering a new age in which all people receive equal rights and privileges. America is supposed to be a place where people can choose to do whatever is in their best interest. Thanks President of the United States of America Bill Clinton. It’s about time people were freed. From the Handsome Prince Columnist confesses: it is a mental thing I thank you for the support that you have provided my col umn over the last three months and I hope to continue the excel lence that my column represents. But right now, I decided that I would likc to confess to you some thing that I have hidden from the biggest majority of you. I have a mental disorder. I was diagnosed with it when I was 4. That was 1977. And for the first 12 to 15 years of my life, I was kinda anti-social. I would tell the outside world “Get lost” like I was "Sesame Street’s" Oscar the Grouch. All I wanted to do was read books and watch some TV. That was it. I thought I would never be accepted by the outside world, so why even try? Why do things you are uncom fortable with just to get laughed at and back-stabbed? I even thought for a time that I would wind up in Dammasch. And at first, my case was ex tremely serious. But in 1980, the new diagnosisis only a mild case, and, given time, I could lead a normal life. More than a decade later, that’s exactly my fast-for ward goal. And I might attain that in a few years. Currently, to the best of my counselor’s knowl edge, I just might be the first student diagnosed as having a Wednesday, ^February 10, 1993 The least I thought I could mental disorder prior to college (in my case, autism) ever to at do with this is give you a realis- tic-like idea into where I came tend this college. And tempt this but even five years those with the condition (autism) ago, it’ would have been some thing of a “lost cause.” How five may have faced similar problems I did. Heavy gravity assistance provided Department of Public Safety works to save students money by Jeff Kemp Staff Writer The Department of Public Safety at Clackamas is providing a service, which often goes unno- ticed, that saves students a tre mendous amount of money. Contrary to some of the rumors that may be floating around, Public Safety Supervisor Jim Wiseman says that his de partment has not stopped provid ing motor assistance to anyone that may need it on campus. He said that it has and always will be part of their function in the fu ture. “When we can assist some one, we’ll be happy to,” Wise man said. Public Safety estimates a total savings of $9,099 to students in lockouts arid Jumps. The aver age cost of lockout service is $32 the gravity of this assistance,” Wiseman explained. With the growing costs Of service expenses, it has been a huge burden that has been lifted tober brought many new faces to Clackamas and a record number of lockouts (48) and jumps (42). Wiseman explained that a lot of people are in an unfamiliar set the winter months due to the cold weather. Vehicle jumps are usually a flat $25 service charge. These services are provided free-of- charge by Public Safety. “People need to understand from the students’ shoulders. “It assists students because of their lack of revenue. They would also spend a lot more time waiting for these services to reach them,” Wiseman maintained. The new school year in Oc ting and are nervous and anxious at the beginning of Fall Term. This, he said, could account for the large number of service calls they received. He also mentioned that it was not unusual to get a large numberof calls for jumps in where at one time. “We’re happy to do these services, but we need people to understand that we need to pri oritize our calls,” Wiseman con cluded.
