Pg. 4 Sports The Clackamas Print Wednesday November 4, 1992 Hickey, Polack lead runners into NWAACC meet by Paul Valencia Staff Writer They lead with two distinct styles. One is a bit cocky, while the other is a tad too modest. But both are team players. And this Saturday, Mike Hickey and Dianna Polack will lead their cross country squads into the championship meet of the Northwest Athletic Associa tion of Community Colleges, at McIver Park near Estacada. The men are led by the fresh man Hickey, a three-sport ath lete who began running his so phomore year at Hudson’s Bay High School in Vancouver “to get in shape for wrestling,” he said. “I love wrestling, but I’m a pretty good runner also,” Hickey admitted. “I’m not sure what my best sport is, but I think I’m a more talented runner.” His coach would have to agree. “Mike is a cocky fresh man, but he backs it up,” said Head Coach Mike Hodges, not ing that being cocky isn’t bad in running. “He believes in him self and he’s not afraid to gamble at pushing the pace and trying to win. “It takes courage to take the lead,” Hodges continued. In cross country, when a runner goes out in front, he becomes the one that is hunted. “Mike is not afraid to do that.” Hickey’s strategy has worked pretty well this year. In leading his team to the Southern Division championship, Hickey was the first Cougar across the fin ish line in all but one race this year. “I worked really hard in the off-season,” he explained. “I ran all summer. I followed Hodges’ summer training schedule.” He also credits his two coaches for his successful season. Hodges and Assistant Coach Eric Hruschka taught Hickey a lot about running strategy and staying in shape. There is another key to his success. It’s really a fear. He can’t stand to lose. “Winning is the main motivator. I hate losing so I train harder so I won’t have to feel that.” A couple of weeks ago, Hickey said he would like to have run with the lead pack at the NWAACC championships. Now, as the race nears, he has changed his goal. “I look, for another good race at NWAACC. I feel like I have a shot at the title.” Polack most likely won’t be the best individual runner in the women’s division Saturday morn ing, but as captain of the team, she leads the two-timq,defending cham pions into the race. For this team- first athlete, that’s all that really matters. “It’s fun to be on a team de spite how hard the workouts are,” she said. “You don’t find too many people who like hard run ning. We’re a unique group. Some people say, ‘You gotta be crazy.’ No, I’m not. It’s really fun.” Polack gave credit to two things that enabled her to have an exciting and successful final season at Clackamas. The first is her team. “Everyone’s character is supportive. They’re really fun to hang around.” She also likes to run so train ing is not something she ‘forces’ herself to do. “Running keeps me in balance with myself. Some times, when I get angry, I go out running and it calms me down. I feel like when I’m out there, I’m free. I’m in control.” On a personal note, though, her inspiration comes from her boyfriend Paul Sendek. “He gives me a lot of spirit to go out and do things. He inspires me to do my best.” Hodges also notices that spirit “She is the perfect example of someone who works hard, gives everything she’s got and is more concerned with the team’s suc cess than personal success,” he said. “It’s really been fun (to be captain),” Polack said, “because everybody’s spirit is up. It’s fun to be able to sit there and give advice because of my past expe riences.” Polack began running her freshman year at Molalla High School and is the only returning Cougar to this year’s squad. “I always tell them to keep in their minds that we can lose,” she explained. “You’ve got to compete no matter what.” But winning and losing is not the main focus for Polack. Her goal for this Saturday’s meet is simple: “I’d like our team to be able to run together in a strong pack and pull on each other to do well. That’s all I want,” she said. “I hope the team does well and nobody is disappointed af ter the race no matter if we win or lose,” she continued. Two different styles, but two winners just the same. Hodges said a good cross country team has both attitudes. “Dianna is the captain, the experienced vet eran. Mike is setting the tone.” Note: The women’s race starts at 11 a.m., while the men will compete at 11:45 q.m. The race is free and Hodges is hop ing for a large turnout to cheer on the Cougars. “We are excit ing to watch,” he said. Members of the men's and women's cross-country Southern Division champions are happy they are number one.
