Poems and short stories are
scattered across the long table.
Notebooks and briefcases packed
full of literature sit nearby. Poetry
books (including one by Russian
author Yevgeny Yevtushenko)
accompany The Oregonian’s A &
E section on the table, while a
guitar sits on another table nearby.
Welcome to “Open Mike.”
“Open Mike” is a weekly
event sponsored by CCC’s Writ
ers’Club. Every Friday,from5:15
to 7 p.m., people gather at Oregon
City Subbs on Main Street in Ore
gon City.
Some people come to share
their creative writing, while others
simply come to listen. People of
ten bring work from their favorite
authors and share it with the group.
In addition, information about lo
cal literary events is shared.
At the April 24 session of
“Open Mike,” Jan Zittleman, the
President of the Writers’ Club,
read a humorous essay that she had
written. It was titled, “If I Knew
You Were Coming, I’d a Baked a
Cake,” and it was about a woman
who baked a beautiful “Barbie
Doll” cake for a birthday party.
The woman had set the cake on top
of her car and then drove off, for
getting about the cake! After Zit
tleman read her essay, the others at
“Open Mike” offered suggestions
and made comments concerning
the essay.

Zittleman also read “Bounty”
at the session. “Bounty” is a poem

even brought their guitars and

criticism and suggestions from the
other writers.
Widerburg explained that
“Open Mike” has been developing
for the past few years. Although
“Open Mike” has been successful,
with as many as 15 people reading
per night, Widerburg would like to
see it grow.
“We want to expand it and
invite people who just want to
come and listen,” he said. “The
bigger the audience, the more fun it
is.”
Although “Open Mike”
doesn’t have the “Bohemian at
mosphere” of Portland bookstores
and cafes, Widerburg thinks that it
is a very good creative outlet for
writers.
Another plus, he said, is that

Clackamas competes for IBM grant
by Maurice Glenn
Staff Writer
CCC has applied for a one mil
lion dollar IBM grant, the first
application in school history. The
grant is to be used to cover three
major areas.

1. Fundamental Curriculum.
2. Applied Research.
3. Institutional application of
total equality management.
A task force consisting of CCC
faculty, administrators and classi
fied staff, headed by Marsha
Coker, is working in behalf of the
school towards receiving the
Grant.
Coker said, “Competition is
really stiff for the grant CCC not
only has to compete with other
community colleges, but also four-
year schools.” This is the first time
that the college has applied for the
grant. On Oct. 1,1992, the school
that wins the grant will be an
nounced.
