Number of AIDS cases grows every day
Continued from Pg. 4
hypodermic needle, the following
scenarios are considered risk
behaviors:
1. ) anal intercourse with an
infected partner
2. ) oral-genital intercourse (oral
sex)
3. ) deep open-mouth kissing
4. ) sexual intercourse with an
infected partner
5. ) sexual intercourse with a
prostitute
6. ) sexual encounters with multiple
sex partners (orgies)
7. ) sharing needles or using a dirty
hypodermic needle for
intravenous drug use
a way to have safer sex.
Another precaution to
adhere to is the use of dental dams,
small pieces of latex rubber, or
latex squares during oral sex.
These serve as a barrier between
bodily fluids.
During oral-anal contact,
also known as “rimming,"
protection should definitely be
used. Studies have shown that the
AIDS virus will grow faster in a
bacterial environment. Since the
anal region of the body excretes
human waste, ’’rimming," is
considered a more dangerous
sexual act.
... several people are afraid to hug an AIDS
victim because of their ignorant fear. AIDS
is not a contagious disease when it comes
to casual contact.
8. ) blood transfusions with
infected
blood
9. ) pregnancy of an infected
woman
Of course, the best way to
avoid AIDS is to refrain from
engaging in any of the above risk
behaviors. Since this is a sexually
transmitted disease, the best
possible solution is abstinence.
However in this day and age, we
can’t preach “abstinence only”
because it is not being realistic. So
if a person is sexually active, he
should use a latex condom. This is
not guaranteeing safe sex without
the risk of AIDS, but it is providing
Although schools, the
media and health associations have
been educating us about AIDS,
many
people
still
have
misconceptions
about
transmission. For example, several
people are afraid to hug an AIDS
victim because of their ignorant
fear. AIDS is not a contagious
disease when it comes to casual
contact. The facts are simple. You
cannot get AIDS from shaking
hands, hugging, standing next to
someone or even from a toilet seat.
Many people joke about
safe sex and laugh about AIDS
because they think that it is only a
homosexual disease. As we all
know, AIDS affects every sex, race
and religion. It doesn’t care what
sexual preference or color you are,
it will kill you all the same.
Also, people may see
precautions as a burden or hassle,
but the fact is AIDS could be the
biggest burden of your life, until
you die five to eleven years later.
Since 1980, there have
been 213,641 AIDS reported cases
in America. This is a conservative
number which is growing every
day.
An estimated 1.5 million
people have HIV, and 138,395
people in the United States have
gone to the grave because of AIDS.
But this disease is not just a
problem in the United States. It is
worldwide.
From 1980 to March 31,
1992 there have been 1.5 million
reported AIDS cases worldwide.
Also 500,000 people have died.
And the scariest statistic is that 10
million people are HIV positive.
These statistics do not
even include some of the third-
world countries. Many countries
do noteven know what AIDS is. At
least our country has the
knowledge'about prevention and
the effects on the human body.
Now if we could only find a cure,
you wouldn’t have to be reading
lengthy, factual articles such as
this one.

the San Francisco AIDS
Foundation. If you need more
information on AIDS, you can call

hours a day, 7 days a week: 1-800-
