EDITORIALOPINION November 6,1991 Page 3 Insufficient training could cost lives by Jennifer Lessard w News Editor " Within the last month, two individuals attending the college were rushed to the hospital due to unexpected respiratory or heart difficulties. These individualS'were lucky that someone knew to call 911. B ut often times that is not enough. Ginny Cowan, a Clackamas student, experienced breathing dif ficulties last month. She was ap proached by a number of individu als that tried to help her. They tried to get her air, and get her to relax. She has an asthma condition and simply thought that if she could get her inhaler she would be just fine. But for Cowan, her inhaler wouldn’t have done her any good this time, and simply relaxing wouldn’t have done any good. She was experiencing what is called congestive heart failure. The Though we we an UTT'know that if if emergency personnel who appeared Though know that emergency personnel who appeared on the scene were surprised that someone falls down and is uncon under her condition she Was still scious and not breathing, 911 is the conscious; According to Renae only option. The last three weeks I have noticed many of the lights in the parking lots have not been functional. On October 7,1991,1 saw one of the lights in the CommunityCen- ter parking lot was out; two weeks later, on October 21,1991 ,the same light was still out. On October 22,1991, all of the lights in the McLoughlin parking lot were out; on October 24,1991, approximately a third of the lights were still out The lack of lighting makes it easier for acts of violence to occur. I am scared to walk alone in the parking lots when they are not lighted. I felt this matter might be of interest to you and your staff considering the two-page editorial of your October 23,1991 issue on rape. Please take any and all measures you can to remedy the problem before something does happen to one of our students. Thank you for your time and courtesies in this matter. Sincerely, Rebecca D. Schroeder Telemorketing so when the emergency personnel arrive you can give them a run down of what you noticed. Know how toadminister mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, CPR and the Heimlich maneuver effectively. • In order to be capable of han dling the unexpected problems, I feel very strongly that everyone needs to take a CPR training course. First aid and CPR training are of fered through the college. They are credit classes that can be used as elective credit. The problem I see is that not everyone has the minimum train ing of CPR or first aid. According to the college’s personnel depart ment there is no regulation which states that instructors and employ ees of the college have to have first aid and CPR training. Though it is recommended and offered to the staff during in-service week, only 11 staff members attended the fall ... term in-service week class. As Parr suggested, CPR train ing should be mandatory for in structors. But I realize that only in a utopian society that would occur, but isn’t there some way we can encourage more staff to enroll in the training courses. Some staff explain that in-service week is very busy and quite often the CPR train ing is held at a conflicting time as other workshops. May I suggest that CPR not be held at a conflict ing time, and staff make arrange ments to complete the eight-hour class so they can be of use in an emergency situation. After all, we are talking about lives. The thing is that taking these classes can benefit you, your fam ily, and mine. So I urge students and the administration to propose that at least heads of departments, and their secretaries complete the course. Harassment not a joking matter To the Editor: In light of the recent events surrounding the Clarence Thomas confirmation there has been a lot of attention focused on sexual harass ment in the work-place. Sexual harassment has been happening for years. I find it sad that it takes a sensational case such as this to bring light to this serious problem. I also find it sad that this case brought out such a defensive reaction in the men and women in this country. After reading the Campus Views section of the October 16 issue of The Clackamas Print, I was disappointed to see the over whelming response that only men sexually harass women in the workplace. That is simply not true. Women can sexually harass men, men can sexually harass women, women can sexually harass women and men can sexually harass men. I was equally disappointed to read Robert Hibberd’s views on the subject of sexual harassment. Contrary to what Hibberd said in the October 23 issue of The Clacka mas Prit, men are not guilty until woven ’raocent. It is ny opinion that Hibberd’s view is extreme and I sensed a bit nf sarcasm in his message. The subject of sexual harassment is too serious of an issue to be taken lightly and dealt with in a sarcastic man ner. It is sarcasm and extremist views that bring sensationalism to an otherwise serious subject. I agree that the Senate Judici ary Committee could have handled the Thomas hearings differently, but 1 also believe that the accusa tions had to be investigated. There are two sides to every story. In representing the male point of view concerning sexual harassment, Hibberd fell short Hill is not the only one who can reap the rewards of “commercial success.” Thomas is just as capable of writ ing a book as Hill is. This book will become a best seller, made into a mini-series and become a commer cial success, leaving Thomas with a“very fat pocket” The entertainment industry has long been a leader in molding the stereotypes people have towards women. It’s only within the last five years that the images of women and their roles in society have been changed in the entertainment in dustry. Shows like Murphy Brown and Designing Women are a posi tive change to the entertainment industry. They depict real-to-life women tha are. strong, hard-work- ing and caring people able to have a career and be self sufficient The stereotypes of women in television not only still exist today in current programs, but they also exist in reruns. Fred Flintstone is the classic example of the domi nant husband who expects his wife to have dinner on the table for him when he walks in the door after a hard day in the gravel pit We are not “taught that all men are pigs.” I am sure that I am not the only woman brought up to believe that women have no place in society but to bear children, cock, clean and sit home and watch soap operas and eat Bon Bon’s. Both men and women are changing their roles in society. Men are staying home with the children. Not as a “sacrifice”, but because they, are as vital to child-raising as women are. Women are prominent in the workplace. Not as a sacri fice, but because they are as vital to the workplace as men are. It’s important that people see the changes that are taking place in the roles women and men play. In order for there to be acceptance we are all going to have to drop our defenses and stop placing blame. and mattress pad $200.
