Page 4 THE CLACKAMAS PRINT SPORTS April 17,1991 Track teams swipe pair of trophies by Brenda Hodgen Sports Editor “We had vaulters and throw ers running back and forth across the field to cheer on their team mates who were running,” ex plained Coach Mike Hodges about last weekend’s Mt. Hood Relays. “Everyone was together as a team; they finally got the concept that if we get together we can get some things done. It was a lot of fun.” The Cougar track teams came home Saturday evening with two rather large trophies from Mt. Hood. One trophy went to the men when they secured first place with 130 points over the opposing nine teams. Second place went to Mt. Hood CC scoring 78 points and Chemeketa CC held third with 49 points. Clackamas’ women finished fourth with 46 points behind Bellevue CC in first with 84, Chemeketa CC at second scor ing 59, and Mt. Hood who took third with 54 points. Clackamas’ second trophy was awarded for first place in the co ed combine team scores where they were far out of the reach of their opponents with 176 points. The closest contender was Mt. Hood in a distant second with 132 points. “The men have won [the Mt. Hood Relays] three out of the last four years, and this was the high est finish here for the women in about eight or ten years,” Hodges continued, “and, this is the first time we’ve won the co-ed com bine in at least that long. So it wasn’t just the men or just the women; it was a great team effort and every one on the team con tributed.” The clear weather on Satur day seemed to have provided some extra energy; however, Hodges explains, “It was a twilight meet so it started to cool off as the evening progressed, but we were hot anyway!” The team is looking toward their last team scoring meet this weekend in Pendleton. “This will be the last meet before Invitationals and Champi onships begin, which will be good,” said Hodges. “During the Invita tionals we limit the number of events each person participates in so they can focus best on their specialties which is important for the Championships. Also, they can rest physically and mentally.” Hodges concluded “It’s most important that we do well but not at the expense of having fun. If we can do both that’s o.k. too!” by Frank Jordan Staff Writer The Clackamas baseball team continued with play last week, splitting two games on the road. On April 6, the Cougars trav eled down to Salem to lace Cheme keta Community College. The Cougars fell behind 6-0 in the second inning, rallied in the middle innings into a tie at 7, but ended up losing the ball game 10-8. “Our defense kind of failed us in that game,” commented Coach Robbie Robinson. “We just had a few breaks go against us.” On April 13, the Cougars got into another big hole, again falling behind 6-0, before rally ing to defeat Lane Community College by the score of 8-7. “I really don’t seem to know where our heads are in the early parts of ball games, but we al- ways seem to wake up about the third inning,” Robinson said. “We’re not making really big mistakes, just a few small mental ones, and that is basically why we fall behind so early.” But, Coach Robinson is en couraged by the play of his team. “We are hitting really well right now, our pitching is coming along as well. We need to work on get ting ourselves ready from the opening pitch but, overall, I am pleased to this point.” Statistics were not available at press time for either game. The next action for the Cougars will be an April 16 afternoon double-header in Vancouver against Clark Community Col lege. The next home games for CCC will be this Saturday, when Clackamas plays host to Linn- Benton Community College, for a double-header that begins at noon on the college diamond. Batmen strike a road win CL4CK4AL45 STANDINGS Ladies continue winning streak: six victories swing record to 14-1 by Lane Scheideman Staff Writer The Cougar softball team won another six games last week to extend their record to 14-1 on the season and 4-0 in league play. Last Tuesday the Cougars battled Lower Columbia Commu nity College in a double-header at home. “They’re one of the better teams in the league,” said Paul Fiskum, coach of the team, before the games were played. The first game was a 10-1 romp for the Cougars while the second game was a much closer contest with the Cougars winning 1-0 in 9 innings (that is two more innings than a normal softball game). “The first game was our league opener and we broke it open in the second inning,” said Fiskum. Eight batters went to the plate producing seven singles and five runs. The hits were all strongsingles with one bunt by freshman Corie Peck. In the third inning two more runs were scored off of Launa Meek’s triple. The fifth inning showed Clackamas scoring two runs on two wild pitches. “Scoring on wild pitches is not usual on our field,” commented Fiskum. Linda Gross pitched the first five innings, giving up two hits, one walk, and throwing two strike outs, while Dawn Seastrom fin ished up the last two innings. “Game two was a heck of a game, and really exciting too,” said Fiskum of the 1-0 win. Christy Tuma pitched the full nine innings striking out three, while allowing only three hits and two walks, a*»-**».... The winning run was scored off of three singles and one double by the Cougars. “These two games will be something positive for our play ers to look back on later in the season,” said Fiskum. Last Friday the Cougars battled LCCC again, but this time on their home field for a non league double-header. Clackamas won both games again by the scores of 3-0 and 3-2. Seastrom pitched a complete game for her second win. Seastrom gave up four hits and only one walk in the game. The second game was much closer but only in the final inning when LCCC scared Clackamas by coming within one run. Gross pitched for her sixth win and increased her record to 6- 1. “She threw for five walks, which isn’t like her,” stated Fiskum. The next two games were played in Aberdeen, WA against Grays Harbor Community Col lege. These two games were much easier for Clackamas; the Cou gars won with the scores of 14-3 and 8-2. In the seventh inning of the first game, 14 batters came to the plate getting seven hits and pro ducing nine runs. Tuma pitched for her fourth win giving up three runs on seven hits. She also threw for three strike outs. The second game showed the Cougars come back from a 2-0 deficit to win 8-2. Seastrom pitched for her third win with no earned runs charged against her.
