)1 SPORTS ■ April 10,1991 THE CLACKAMAS PRINT Page 7 Breaking in the new home turf... 5 Cougar track teams soar to first over rivals t i by Brenda Hodgen Sports Editor Some spectacular things happened over the weekend for the Cougar men’s and women’s track teams. The teams competed here against Lane Community College, Mt. Hood Community College, Grays Harbor Commu nity College, and Green River Community College. Clackamas* men and women both took first place which marks a 6-0 record for the men this season, and extends their number of consecutive wins to 21 over the past two years, with a record of 47-1 over the last three and a half years. For the women this competition proved to be successful since it was their first victoty over Lane CC since the late 1970s and the second year in a row they’ve been victorious over Mt. Hood CC since the 70s. Photo by Greg Hen Pam Raade strives for the lead In the women's 400m dash, where she finished third with a time of 1:00.2. Raade is this team's strength in the sprints. The Cougar ladies were victori* ous over all four competitors last weekend including rivals Lane CC and Mt. Hood CC. We ended up very tough. The other teams were horrified by the weather and ended up scratching out of events and folding, but our teams just kept fighting,” explained Hodges. “It was a historic time...just really neat. The men performed just like I thought they would, and the women performed better than we ever could have wished for,” he continued. “This was the first meet we ran on the newly resurfaced track and it was just a great way to inaugurate the new track” The Cougars were not only victorious; they won by consider able numbers. Men’s scores were: Clackamas 132, Mt Hood 78, Lane 43, Green River 18, and Grays Harbor 11. Women’s scores fin ished at: Clackamas 81, Lane 44, Grays Harbor 33, Mt Hood 32, and Green River 14. The men swept all three places in the hammer and the pole vault and took first and second in the 3,000m steeple chase. Also four new NWAACC qualifiers came out of this meet: Billy Borkus and Gene Brenderhorst in the steeple chase, Kyle Riggs in the 110m hurdles, and Tim Grady in the 100m dash. Before this meet the team had 16 men qualifying in 23 events and 8 women qualifying in 12 events. Hodges showed enthu- siasm here, too.
