Cougar women start basketball pre-season with tosse;

The Women’s Basketball team
kicked off their pre-season play
last weekend suffering defeats
against Grays Harbor Community
College, 81*71, Friday and Walla
Walla Community College, 82-76,
Saturday.
Coach Phil Garver stressed
some concern over how the ladies
were handling the ball.
> “In both of those games we
really needed to work on just tak
ing care of the ball,” he explained.
“We had a lot of turnovers. I think
there were thirty against Grays
Harbor alone. We can’t have that
many turnovers and be success
ful”

ing onto the ball once we get it”
Some of the top players against
Grays Harbor were Freshmen
Launa Meek with 19 points and 6
rebounds, Jenny Spilseth follow
ing close behind with 15 points
and 5 rebounds, and Kathryn Muck
with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and
hitting 4 out of her 5 freethrow
attempts.
Against Walla Walla Meek
and Spilseth consistently lead the
team once again. Meek came out
Garver sees a real issue with
team leadership and he is confi
dent the team will improve in time.
“We are a very young team
and I think that we can expect
these types of mistakes from the
young players. But, my sophomores
have to come through better for
me,” he stressed. “We need to
work on better leadership roles
on court.”
The team’s efforts were not
all unsuccessful, though.
“We rebounded well for being
as short as we are,” Garver con
tinued. “We out rebounded Grays
Harbor which is good because
they’re a fairly tall team. We also
had some good defensive action,
but every time we’d steal the ball

Men's basketball opens season with wii

The Clackamas men’s basket
ball team opened the 1990-91
season Friday night with a 84-71
victory over Clark College on the
opening night of the Red Dog
tourney.-
. “It was a good win for us,
although we did no t play very well
defensively,” Coach Royce Kiser
commented. “We did not play
great defense in the first half, but
we did play better in the second
half.”
Kiser was also concerned
about the rebounding of his team.
“We just did not hit the offensive
boards the way I would have liked,
and we did not box out defen
sively.”
David Daniels led the victors
with 24 points on 11-19 shooting.
Dan Bartel contributed 15 points
and 5 assists and Glen Kiser
chipped in 13 points. Mike Alex
ander led Clark with 23 points.
In Clackamas’ second game,
Dan Bartel fired in 22 points to
lead the Cougars to a 72-61 win
as
over Linn-Benton Community
College. The Cougars ran out to
a35-22 halftime lead and hung on
for the victory. Kiser was happy
with the win, but the same prob
lem continued to plague the
Cougars: rebounding. “We were
again out-rebounded, this time by
36-23. We will not win very con
sistently if we get out-rebounded.”
Chris Lucas used 5<-for-8
shooting on the way to 14 points,
Daniels had 12 points and 6 as
sists, and Glen Kiser helped out
with 12 points and led Cougar
rebounders with 5 boards. Chris
Whiting led Linn-Benton with 22
points, while Todd Karo chipped
in 14 points and 10 rebounds.
In the tournament champi
onship game on Sunday, Mt Hood
Community College used a strong
second half to hang a 107-71 loss
on Clackamas. “We just played a
very bad game,” commented Coach
Kiser. “We played poor defense
throughout, we turned the ball
over a lot, and again we were out
rebounded very badly.” In fact,
the Cougars were beat out 45-11
