Emotional 'Night' begins
by Nolan Kidwell
Staff Writer
Night of the Iguana, by Ten
nessee Williams, is the Fall Term
play that opens tomorrow night in
McLoughlin Theatre. It contin
ues Nov. 30 and Dec. 1,7,8 and
is formed during the play is be
tween the characters Hanna and
Shannon. Shannon ends up se
ducing her. Hanna is traveling with
her grandfather who claims to be
the oldest living and practicing
poet. Shannon also has to deal
with his feelings toward the hotel
owner which unfold throughout
the tour.
The play is a very moving story,
according to Shields, although
some of the situations and dia
logue have a humorous note.
“The question presented by
this play is really how to deal with
personal loneliness,” said Shields.
He described the play as having a
lot of feelings and emotional
material in it
“Some people would even call
this a tragedy depending on their
past experiences,” said Shields.
The story takes place during
9.
“I think this show will be
quite evocative and I think that
the audience will have a wide range
of emotions,” said Jack Shields,
the play’s director.
The basic play is about a for-
mer Episcopal minister named
Shannon, who has been defrocked
and is running a tourism busi
ness in South Mexico’s rain for
ests. Shannon is forced to deal
with the relationships which
develop during a bus tour that he
is conducting for a group of church
women.
The main relationship which
the 1940s. This is never stated
during the play, but is evident
because the Germans are bomb
ing London during the course of
the play.
, Much like many of the other
plays by Williams, Night is said
to be very dramatic.
“The poetry of the play is
absolutely beautiful. The lan
guage which he chooses to give
the characters is absolutely filled
with imagery,” related Shields.
He also said that it is a great
pleasure for him to be involved
with a strong enough cast to deal
with the intense language which
Williams uses.
“This theater has an audi
ence intimacy,” said Sheilds about
the auditorium size. He feels this
will not be a problem and may
even add to the serious subject
matter involved.
