Cadets excited about laying foundation
by Jennifer Soper
Feature Editor
With the Public Safety cadet
program barely underway, senior
cadets Ken Schnell and Cynthia
Kunz have a lot to be excited about
“We’re kind of laying down
the foundation for the other ca
dets,” explained Kunz.
“It’s a pilot program,” she
continued. “There are a couple of
other colleges looking at our
program and will model theirs after
ours if it works.”
Both K mz and Schnell are
criminal j.^tice majors in their
second year at Clackamas. They
view the cadet program as a be
ginning to their careers in law
enforcement.
“I went in for the first hand
experience of seeing what police
work is actually like... just to get
the feel of it,” said Schnell.
“It’s kind of a stepping stone
into the profession,” Kunz said.
The cadets provide extra
grounds patrol for the campus,
traffic enforcement, building se
curity and crowd control. They
also walk students and staff out at
night and provide general direc
tions or information for people
when asked.
“We’re a link in the chain of
command between the chief and
the Indians,” said Schnell of the
duties of senior cadets. “A lot of
supervision is put on our hands.”
The effects of the cadet pro
gram have not been determined
yet. Kunz and Schnell believe they
are making a positive difference.

not as likely to committ crimes
with cadets around,” explained
Kuntz.
The primary function of the
cadets is community relations.
“We do a lot of walk outs at
night,” began Schnell. “People
really like that. I’ve gotten a lot of
praise and people have said ‘I’m
really glad that you are here.’”
One of the issues the cadets
are considering is the expansion
of the college.
“Three new buildings are being
discussed which would mean more
students which would probably
mean more cadets,” Kunz said.
“As the campus grows and
expands, the greater public safety

will expand with, it,” added Schnell.
One key thought with Schnell
and Kunz is co-operation.
“You learn to keep an open
mind,” said Schnell. “Everybody
is different. We’re learning how
to say something to someone.”
At the end of spring term the
program will be reassessed and
any necessary changes will be made
Both senior cadets hope to see it
continue.
“I think the program is a great
idea. It’s really good for law en
forcement students to be able to
do something like this,” concluded
Kunz.
