The game of volleyball is on some minor head injuries and had
hold this evening for the Clacka been shaken up from the incident.
These injuries caused Coach
mas volleyball team. No match is
set for tonight, but this weekend Kathie Woods to decide against
they face their last two league traveling to Salem over the week
matches against Southwestern end for the Chemeketa Cross-Over.
“I figured with all that had
Oregon Community College, Fri
day and Umpqua Community happened it would probably be
College, Saturday before the play best if we didn’t go to the tourney
and instead take a vacation,” ex
offs on Monday.
Last week, the ladies came plained Woods. “Last week, I think
clean with a victory over Linn- we were real fortunate to come
Benton in three games straight out as well as we did against Linn-
15-10,15-5,15-5. Their win brought Benton. Jenny toughed it out on
the league record to 7-5. Sopho that sprained ankle, and it’s a good
more Tara White led the team thing because without Tisha we
once again with 16 kills, Fresh wouldn’t really have had any other
man setter Jenny Gay came through setters. Also, after her accident
with 33 assists after spraining her Julie scored three aces.
“This weekend we have to win
ankle in pre-game waim-up, and
Freshman Debbie Asboe was in at least one of our games,” Woods
continued. “Both teams beat us
with 6 blocks.
The team played Wednesday before. SWOCChas only had two
without the support of their cap defeats and both were to Mt Hood
tain,Tisha Chevron. Chevron was so they’re going to be tough. We
involved in a car accident Tuesday just need to do our best with them
afternoon with another teammate, first and then move on to Umpqua.”

The Cougar volleyball team hopes to win one of their next two games, in order for them to make
the playoffs. The Cougar's next game is Friday against Southwestern Oregon at 7 p.m.

By Heatherle Himes

The 1990-91 wrestling season
began with a resounding thump
Saturday, Nov. 3, as the Cougars
hosted the Eighth Annual CCC
Takedown Tournament.
A total of approximately 285
grapplets competed in elemen
tary, junior and open divisions.
Colleges represented at the event
were Southern Oregon Commu
nity College, Western Oregon
Community College, Lower Co
lumbia Community College, and
Oregon State University, with in
dependent wrestlers from Port
land State University and alumni

Nevins (126), fourth places John
Mehas (126) and Craig Morris
(134), and fifth place Chad
Westover (142). Jason Baurer and
Steve Teeny tied for fifth at 177,
the weight class with the most
entrants.
Jackson said that the team as
a whole benefi tted in several ways
from participating in the tourna
ment
“We got a chance to go against
OSU, which we normally wouldn’t
do,” he said. “Anytime we can do
that we will get better. It gave us a
chance to see where we are
physically.” He added that it was
also a main fund raiser for the
team.
“It gets us in the mood for
wrestling,” Jackson continued. “It’s
a hard transition to come from
high school to college wrestling
for many of the freshmen because
their bodies are still saying to them
it’s football season.”
The Cougars wil 1 be wrestling
in seven more tournaments over
the season, including the Clacka
mas Invitational on Jan. 26. They
are slated for a rough series of
duals against regional teams. To
prepare for such a schedule, the
from various universities.
The tournament was double
elimination with a true first place,
and only takedowns counted as
points. Five takedowns constituted
a pin. Tournament staff consisted
only of volunteers.
“It was an unusual* type of
tournament since the tournament
was held before the starting date
(of the official season) we had to
keep it as a takedown tournament
and we couldn’t hire officials,”
said CCC Head Wrestling Coach
Jim Jackson. “We would like to
thank all the people who did help
because we couldn’t have had the
thing without them.”
Matt Lindland, a returning
grappler originally from Gladstone
High School, placed second at 158
pounds after loosing his final match
to Trent Flack of OSU 2-1.
“At least I know now that I
have to beat Flack at the (Oregon
Wrestling) Classic,” said Lindland.
“I knew that anyway, but it also
helped to find out where I’m at as
far as the season. It’s a good start
ing point and it helped me find
out where I need to go.”
Also making showings at the
tourney were third place Cory
team will be having matches against
other community colleges, and will
try to get as many men to practice
as possible. Nov. 16 the team will
face Yakima Valley Community
College and a team to be an
nounced later.
