ougar volleyball team sets sights on playoff march

At the season half, the lady
Cougars are looking strong with a
league record of 4-5 and setting
sights on the playoffs as they pre
pare for tonight’s battle at Port
land Community College.
The Clackamas Volleyball
team defeated the Panthers in the
first round of league play so as
Coach Kathie Woods puts it, “We
should beat ‘em in three.”
This weekend, the team will
continue on to meet up with Lane
Community College on Friday
and Chemeketa Community Col
lege at home on Saturday.
Lane CC should be a fairly
easy win according to Woods,
since like PCC, the ladies have
already defeated them; but
Chemeketa is the game that the
team plans to focus on.

we’ve beaten before, so they
should be no problem,” explained
Woods, “but we suffered a loss
against Chemeketa earlier in the
season, and that’s the one we need
to turn around.”
The ladies ventured to Al
bany last week for a “must win”
against Linn-Benton Community
College and returned victorious
taking the match in the first three.
“We played a good game in
which we stayed consistently
dominant,” stated Woods. “It was
a good win for us to get us back on
track.”
Tara White and Julie
Braman led the team to their win.
White finished with nine kills,
two aces, four blocks, and seven
digs; and Braman was equally
successful, completing six kills,
three aces, five blocks, and seven
digs. Jenny Gay also a dominant
player finished at 17 assists.

competed up north for the
Spokane Cross-Over against
eight other teams where they fin-

“I guess I’ve been running since
the seventh grade, so about six
years.”
Hobbies: “Basketball and music.
I like to get new music; I listen to
a lot of rap, post modern, and
alternative music.”
Future plans: "I’d like to go to
University of Washington for
running, but I would probably go
to OSU since it’s cheaper and has
a better track program.”
Any suggestions on how to im-
prove the campus?:“Get a better
library facility, the crowding will
probably get even worse later.”
How about a favorite teacher?:
“Since I’ve only been here for
two weeks, so it’s hard to tell, but
my speech teacher Frank Har
low is pretty cool.”
Does cross country take up an
important part of your life?“It
takes three hours a day and Sat
urdays. Sometimes we leave
early on Friday, so I’ll miss
classes in the afternoon. We’re
also supposed to run on Sundays,
but....”
Do
you
watch
other
sports?^‘Well, I don’treally fol-
low baseball, but the Mets are my
favorite team. I’d say Oakland
for the world series though.”

our league standing; it just gave us
some good playing time to see
what we need to work on and
some good experience on the
court.”
The Cougars defeated LBCC
2-0 and Green River CC 2-1, then
suffered losses to Yakima, Mt.
Hood, Spokane, and Shoreline
Community Colleges. YCC took
first in the tourney.
However, there were two
exciting accomplishments for the
Cougars in Spokane. Freshmen
Debbie Asboe and Julie Braman
were selected as Spokane Cross-
Over All-Stars.
In order to make the play
offs, they must finish the last
seven games of the season with no
less than a 5-2 record for the s ec-
ond half.

Iraqi crisis?: “Well, I think we’re
going to go to war. It’s pretty
crazy. If I was drafted to fight, I’d
go, but no one really wants to
participate.”
How do you think the team will
do?: “I think we have the poten
tial to do as well as last year.
There are a lot of good runners
on the team.”
