Cougars play well, claim fifth in NWAACC tourney
by Mark A. Bonelli
Editor-in-Chief
A fifth place finish at the
NWAACC tourney in Walla Walla,
ended a splendid season for the
Clackamas men’s basketball team.
The Cougars got the tourna
ment off to a great start, with a 80-
79 win Over Centralia on Thurs
day. Clackamas got off to a quick
start, and raced to a 37-30 half
time lead.
“I thought we played really
hard. I didn’t think that we played
badly; we played well and played a
pretty good team,” said Head
Coach (‘Rolls’) Royce Kiser.
David Daniels was the Cou
gars’ offense force as he pumped
in a game-high 28 points. Dan
Bartel also added 13 points to the
winning cause.
“We played a goodjdefensive
game. They didn’t shoot very well,
and that’s because of our defense,”
noted Kiser.
The Cougars played well in
their second game of the tourney
against Bellevue, but this time it
wasn’t quite good enough. Clacka
mas got off to a slow start, falling
behind 25-6. After that, the Cou
gars outplayed Bellevue the rest
of the game, but just didn’t have
enough to overtake them at the

margin, the game was close.
overall.

“They are the most talented
team that we’ve played all year,”
said Kiser.
Tim Osburn and Todd Spencer
each chipped in 15 points, and
Daniels scored 13 in a losing cause.
A tired bunch of Cougars set
out to face Umpqua at Saturday’s
game where fatigue had an effect.
Clackamas hung tough through
out the first half, and held a 37-36
lead. The second half saw the
drained Cougars give their all, but
Umpqua had a little more, enough
to beat Clackamas 87-74.
Brett Nesland and David
Hollingsworth each tallied 15
points. Dan Bartel scored 14, while
Tim Osburn added 13 points and
nine rebounds.
“We played real well at the
beginning, but we just ran out of
gas. The kids gave it everything
they had; they never laid down,”
said Kiser.
Kiser was not at all disap
pointed at how hard his team played
in the tournament, or this season.
“I don’t think a team can play
any harder than we did this year.
I’ve never had a team that’s played
harder,” remarked Kiser.
Kiser also marveled at the way
his bunch of over achievers ac
complished so much this year.
“I almost admire the way that
they played. They were physically
and mentally ready to play every
night.”
