Clackamas finished firrst in the league and will travel to Mt. Vernon, Washington this Friday to play in the NWAACC tournament at Skagit Valley. by Staci Beard Staff Writer Two weeks before the NWAACC championships the Cougar softball team completed a light week, coming up with two victories out of three games. At Olympic they completed a season sweep with two more vic tories of 9-0 and 11-1. It was a strong offensive warmup to the upcoming tournament. In the first game Merry Ferguson, Yvonne Johnson, and Ann Kerr all went two for four in the team’s effort of ten hits. For the second game of the series Jennifer McElroy went two for four, while Fergusonwasa two for three. Kerr rounded out the strong hitting day going two for two. The second game also saw the first five batters score in the first inning to push out to a quick lead that was never in doubt. Both pitchers had strong games, with Johnson giving up two hits and striking out four. Heather McCorkle kept Olympic at bay with a three-hitter in the second game. On Friday the Cougars got a chance to play Skagit Valley, one of the Northern division teams going to the tournament. Although they suffered a 5-2 loss it was a well played game. “Skagit played well. We just didn’t get any breaks. We had some really hard hits but they always seem to go directly to a fielder. I don’t feel too bad about the loss because we also played well,” commented Coach Paul Fiskum. With the season completed the team is now working hard in preparation for this weekend’s tournament. ( A few of the teams the Cou gars played against during the season will be at the tournament. One of the Cougar’s early victories was a tough one against Spokane. Wenatchee, a Northern divi sion team, is an excellent defen sive team and the 2-0 victory that the Cougars got could have gone either way. Highline and the Cougars split their meetings and Highline took second place in the Southern divi sion. Although Clackamas took all four meetings against Green River, Fiskum feels that they are a threat and are better then their record shows. “We are totally ready and the team wishes it were happening tomorrow. It is going to be a tough tournament, and team playing there could win it,” stated Fisloim. The NWAACC championship tournament is being held at Skagit Valley College in Mt. Vernon, Washington on May 26-27. The Cougars’ first game is 4:30 p.m. May 26. Clackamas finishes frustrating season, loses coach by Mark A Borrelli Sports Editor A season of disappointment which saw the Cougar baseball team go 6-24 mercifully came to an end Friday with a double-header at Linn-Benton. The first game saw the Road Runners race off to a lead and hold on for a 12-9 victory. Tim Arendell pitched another strong game in the second contest, as the Cougars ended the season on a bright note, winning 4-3. The final game of the year proved to be the final one also for Coach Paul Roeder, who once again decided to call it quits. Roeder had retired last year, but came back this season when Greg Tagert was fired. “I would only have come back for one more year and this pro gram is going to be in a 2-3 year rebuilding program, so it’s better if someone else came in and started rebuilding now,” said Roeder. Clackamas suffered through a nightmare season in which they could manage to win only six games. Roeder feels that recruiting and lack of talent are the reasons for the Cougars’ downfall. “We didn’t have much talent. We got started late recruiting because they waited until one week before school started to hire a coach. All of the good kids went somewhere else,” said Roeder. Clackamas will be looking for a coach to replace Roeder and is hopeful of doing so as soon as possible. “We are trying to get together with another department so we will be able to offer a full time position. Right now, we don’t have a full time position available in health or PE, so we are trying to split a full time position between coaching and teaching in another department,” said Athletic Direc tor Carol Petersen. “I encourage those who cal! and are interested to write me a formal letter of interest and when I have a full time position open, I will send a letter of the job open ing,” said Petersen.
