Women w first mee Trackmen prepare for season Lane Community College once again ap pears to be the team the Cougars look to beat in the Oregon Community College Athletic Association. Lane has captured the OCCAA and Re gion 18 titles five consecutive years and the Titans may have their most balanced team ever. For Clackamas, the 1977 season will be one of depth, rather than individual stand outs. The Cougars are strong in the track events from the 440 on up through the dis tance races and steeplechase. In the field events, the pole vault, high jump and weight competitions are solid. While sheer numbers will be the Cougars' key in several events, Clackamas does boast several top individual competitors for con ference and regional honors. In the javelin, school record holder Jeff Harmon, a sophomore from The Dalles who has thrown the spear 192-1, will be pushed by Lakeridge H.S. product Bruce Silver. Silver, a transfer from Lane, has bettered 200 feet. The high jump features three strong en tries in school record holder Frank Gibson, a sophomore from Rex Putnam H.S.; Jim Seymour, also of Rex Putnam, and transfer Joe Hadley, of Tenino, Wash, and Eastern Washington State. All three have cleared the national qualifying height of 6-5, with Gib son's best 6-8 1/4. In the distance races and steeplechase, Cougar head coach Buck Monroe can call upon a large cast, including sophomores Pat Curl, Alan Knoop, Don Jones, Jeff Ponsness and Kelly Sullivan and freshman Damian Ranger. The 880 and mile are two other events where the Cougars have depth. Wilco League champion Ken Wanvig, of Clackamas H.S., leads the mile competitors. The other Cou gars, some of whom may also run the 440, are sophomores Ralph Painter and Jay Knab, of Lakeridge H.S. who transferred to Clack amas from Lane, and freshmen Don Brown, who was second in the AA in the 880 from Sheridan, Keith Self and Ron Schaum- berg and John Drury, both of St. Helens. Other top individuals are: Kim Roehl, sophomore from Tillamook, in the 440 and relays; hurdler Lynn Teuscher, a transfer from Southwestern Oregon CC; shot putter and discusman Dale Veith, of Central Catho lic H.S., and sprinter Frank Zornado, of LaSalle H.S. The Cougar trackmen are preparing for the OCCAA Relays this Saturday held at the Clackamas track. Cougars beat Clark in opener Clackamas Community College's baseball team opened its 1977 season on a happy note as the Cougars topped Clark College 12-2, Saturday, March 19, at Clackamas. The second game of the scheduled dou bleheader was called because of darkness after six innings with the teams tied, 2-2. A pair of freshman pitchers - Alan Lewis, of Marshall H.S., and Gary Fiorante, of Tigard -- combined to limit Clark College to just one hit in the opening game. Lewis, a left-hander, yielded an infield single in the first inning and the visitors combined the hit with three Clackamas errors for their only runs of the contest. Lewis pitched the first four innings, striking out eight. Lynn Dyer, a freshman from Clackamas H.S., sparked the Cougars at the plate with three hits, two of them doubles, and five runs batted in. Ed Leniger, a freshman from Oregon City, and John Kline contributed two hits apiece and Dwayne Kabusreiter, of Lakeridge H.S., added two RBIs. In the second game, Clark picked up both its runs on an error and a walk and a throw ing error by starting pitcher Mike Baker. The Cougars knotted the game with sin gle runs in the fifth and sixth. A walk, an error and Greg Cusick's infield out tallied the first run and a walk and two Clark errors produced the other counter.
