Those who have been in the library lately
have probably seen the large double-row
self-aligning roller bearing on display and
wondered where it came from and what it
was used for.
The bearing, the largest of its kind,
weighs approximately 250-300 pounds and
was used in the manufacture of paper at
Publishers Paper Mill in Oregon City.
"Mac" McVickers, Publishers plant en
gineer, said this particular bearing cost
approximately $7,500 and two bearings are
needed to support one shaft.
aring
The rolls on the bearing serve as an iron
to press rough paper into smooth paper
and the paper passes through the rolls at
250 feet per minute or 30 m.p.h.
The wear and tear on these bearings
usually results in replacement within two
years.
Ernie Whisenant, machine shop instruc
tor and department chairman of the metals
area, said the bearing was moved from Pub
lishers by a fork lift and moved into the
library with a hydraulic floor jack.
Whisenant said the bearing was meant
to be cut into small parts and used in
machine shop or welding projects, but
Margaret Charters, librarian, saw the bearing
and asked that it be displayed in the library.
"It's a good exercise to look at," said
Whisenant. She advises caution in moving
the inner ring of the bearing because the
self-aligning feature could cause physical
injury if not moved slowly and cautiously.
A new bearing display may soon be con
structed using a variety of smaller bearings.
