Cougars defeat Cavaliers The Clackamas Community College men's basketball team will play the Willamette University J.V.'s Friday, Jan. 14 at 5:30 in Salem following a contest against Chemeketa Community College Wednesday. When they return from the Salem game, the Cougars will host a league game with Judson Bap­ tist at 7:30 Saturday in Randall Gym. Clackamas has racked up a winning re­ cord against all of this week's opponents. They hold a 15-2 edge over Chemeketa, and a 9-7 edge with Judson Baptist (the Cou­ gars won both 1976 contests 102-71 and 105-90). Tuesday, Jan. 4, the Cougars raised their season's record to 7-3 when they downed Concordia College 94-59. Clackamas, which now averages better than 91 points per game on offense, allowed the Cavaliers only.one field goal during the first 10 minutes of play, as they raced to a quick 29-5 lead. Preston Martin, out of Rex Putnam H.S., scored 21 points and hauled in 22 rebounds for the Cougars. Freshman Jeff Nilsen, Lakeridge, tallied 18 pointsand 11 rebounds. Sophomore Frank Gibson and Frosh Jim Coffman contributed 14 points each. The Cougars bombed Concordia even though they lacked three starters. Chuck Sampson, Rick McGowan and John Van- Acker missed the Concordia contest because of late return from Christmas break. They are expected to be ready for conference play. Bill Ullman (6-7 center) may miss the remainder of the season because of a health problem and Doug Kanis (6-9 backup cen­ ter) has left the team for personal reasons. In more recent basketball action, the Cougars dropped two games, one to Blue Mountain Community College and the other to Linn Benton Community. According to Coach Len Tirrill, "The problem was that we just didn't play up to our capabilities, and when you don't do that, you can't ex­ pect to win." Hopefully the Cougars will play up to their capabilities in their up­ coming contests with Willamette and Jud­ son Baptist Colleges. The Regional tournament will b February 10-12.
