"The loss of Bruton has been very
damaging, but I feel that the return of
Steve Morris and Joe Davis, undefeated be
fore his injury, will in some way compen
sate for that," said Berney.
Morris, a 142 or 150-pound sophomore,
was the champion at Grays Harbor and as a
freshman made the varsity at Portland State
by defeating Mike Mathies. Additional help
will also come from Mark Wilson, a 260
pound heavyweight.
There has also been an invitation to
wrestle in the nearby Mt. Hood CO tourna
ment this weekend, which includes Green
River, Umpqua and the host team, Mt. Hood.
This tournament is a very critical one. It
will determine the seatings for the upcoming
regional tournament.
"We still have our own tournament on
Jan. 22 which is the largest junior college
tournament in the Northwest this season.
It includes such teams as the University of
Oregon, Oregon State and North Idaho,"
said Berney.
Looking back on the season, Berney said,
"I'm proud of the way our team has held
together. We started the season with the
goal of becoming national champions and
considering that we have had to face the
toughest schedule ever thrown at us, I feel
that we've come a long way towards achiev
ing that goal.
