11 apathy W/ÎST-e The recent student election was a disaster. From an estimated 3500 students on campus, only 126 votes were cast. It is not known why there was such a poor turnout at the voting counter. One reason may have been the lack of campus publicity and proper campaign exposure by involved candidates. Apathy may be yet another reason for the lack of involvement. Many students assume that the Associated Student Government is a "Mickey Mouse" operation made . up of token positions and delegating meaningless responsibilities to its officers. Other students believe ASG does not affect them, and seem to feel that any effort spent on involvement would be wasted. The truth of the matter is that ASG affects every stu dent on campus, because part of their tuition provides a budget for ASG, which happens to be close to $60,000 this year. This money is indirectly returned to the students in that it is used to sponsor various clubs, speakers, dances, concerts and seminars. A student scholarship, some tui tion grants, and student publications are also included in this fund. Since the ASG budget is spent for the students of this college, it is their responsibility to see that they get what they have paid for. There is talk about campus concerning a proposed budget cut. Administrators, in considering priorities, may decide from the student election turnout that the ASG budget could use a bit of trimming. As a result of this action, the CCC campus could turn out to be as drab and cold as the concrete walls of Barlow Hall. J_cf ao. m / x « R MTO Mie Q To the Editor: Reiteration of the Phil Bladine campaign slogan that Les AuCoin "talks like Barry Goldwater and votes like Bella Abzug" serves mostly to show the holes in Bladine's campaign philosophy. Having served with Les in the state legislature, I can attest to his competence as a legislator. Examination of the record proves that Les AuCoin makes his judgments independently and in what he believes is the best interest of Oregon. For instance, he agreed with Mrs. Abzug, and disagreed with Barry Goldwater, in voting to close $3 billion in tax loopholes, and in voting to provide Social Security pensioners with a full cost-of-living increase. On the other hand, he agreed with Goldwater and disagreed with Mrs. Abzug in voting against an $8.5 billion increase in budget authority, and for a bill to cut off foreign aid to nations that haven't repaid loans made to them by the United States. That "talks like Barry, votes like Bella" slogan was developed by the Republicans in Washington, and is being used against Democratic congressmen all over the country. Maybe it fits somebody, but it certainly doesn't fit Les AuCoin. Earl Blumenauer State Representative 7317 S.E. Woodward Portland, Oregon 97206 Page 4 19600 S.
