SPORTS INSERT 1988-89 Women's Basketball SPORTS INSERT November 23,1988 Page 1 Women hopeful for another Cinderella season by Ray Marcham Contributing Writer The Cougar women’s basket ball team has a tough act to fol low. After a incredible season last year, during which the Cougars did not lose a divisional game, Coach Phil Garver must tiy to keep the momentum going. With just three sophomores coming back, Garver will have a young, but impressive team. But he knows there will be pressure to repeat the 26-4 season that took place less than one year ago. Garver, however, is used to the pressure. will be a factor on the team, ei ther. “We brought in a lot of talented new freshmen this year, with five all-starters. We will be a lot stronger in the post this year than in past years. Our guards are just as quick, but if the fresh men can make a really strong, immediate impact and get ori ented with the system quickly, we will have a very good year.” The Cougars do have some height in the middle with 5’11" Sophomore Leslie Hughes and two freshman at 6’2". Dianne Gale, another freshman, is 5*10" so the center and forward 'We brought in a lot of talented new freshmen this year... we will be a lot stronger in the post than in past years." “We anticipate getting pres sure,” Coach Garver said. “Every year since I’ve been here, it seems like every team we face has one of its best games of the year against us. Teams that shouldn’t be in the gamewith us make shots that they wouldn’t usually make.” Garver expects his team to be one of the top two teams in the NWAACC Southern Division, along with Umpqua. “Umpqua has plenty of sophomores com ing backh and they will be the team to beat,” says Garver. But we play 13 games before we play them, so the girls will know what to expect when we play them.” Garver also expects Mt.Hood to be a factor in the divisional race. He doesn’t think that experience position for the Cougars should be filled with some tall ladies. Tracy Jones and Carol Brison, the other two returning Sopho mores, are both 5’8" as are fresh man Stacy Wallace and Casie harker, who is proving herself to be quite an all-around athlete at Clackamas. Garver has not quite settled on a starting line up and he proba bly will not. “I usually run 9-10 girls in a game anyway. Some girls switch from game to game. The game is a lot faster than the high school game and some just can’t run for 40 minutes,” he said. Garver, who took over the team in 1983 when Nancy Mick- leson quit to become the tennis coach, has had great success with the women’s basketball program here at Clackamas. It culminated in last year’s 26-4 season and co:.citing the first team ever to go undefeated in the NWAACC Southern Division. The coach comes from Indi ana where basketball is a reli gion. He graduated from Ben Davis High School :n Indianapo lis afterwhich he went to Warner Pacific College in Portland on a basketball scholarship. The last two years there the Knights went to the NAIA playoffs. Garver graduated with degrees in health and physical education, with minors in history and psychol ogy.
