    OPINION
THE PRINT
Dear Students,
This is a voluntary survey to find out Clackamas Community College
Student opinions onthecampusChildCare Center, on Student Activities and
Student Government, and on their feelings and concerns at CCC.
Clackamas Community College has a Child Care Facility which is in need
of major improvements. The college is planning to eliminate the Center by
July 1,1989. Would students be interested in a new Center? What would the
students like to see done? Would students be willing to get involved to
improve or acquire a new Center?
Through this survey, ASG hopes to find our what CCC students are con
cerned about, what they want to know more about, and see accomplished on
campus.
These surveys need to be returned to the Student Activities Office
(located in the Community Center) no later than November 23,1988.
Sincerely,
l.

Every four years, it happens. The
people of the most powerful and influen
tial country in the free world elect their
leader.
During this year’s election process,
campaigning took onawhole new mean
ing. Instead of candidates trying to con
vince the people that they were the one
who should be the next leader, thecandi-
dates were showing us why their oppo
nent should not be elected.

I don’t believe that the founding
fathers of this country had that in mind
when they came up with the process. If all
these candidates can do to get elected is
point out their opponent’s.mistakes and
shortcomings, then maybe those who say
that the past few elections have been a
choice of the lesser of two evils is true.
Some critics say that George Bush
was elected because he took the initia
tive to attack Michael Dukakis on issues.

WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE TO BE A PROBLEM THAT C.C.C.
(ARE OF OR HAS CNER LOOKED?
1
The fact that Dukakis did not defend
several of these accusations may be a
major reason he lost the election.
The furlough issue is one where Bush
scored some big points. By accusing
Dukakis of being personally responsible
of letting Willie Horton, a convicted
murderer serving a life sentence, out on
one of the weekend furloughs, Bush raised
suspicion that Dukakis was soft on crime.
Although Dukakis tried to defend these
accusations, he took too long and the
item remained on the minds of several
voters.
Throughout the campaign the sub
ject of guns, both foreign and domestic,
came up. Bush was targeted as being
involved in the arms for hostages deal,
better known as the Iran-Contra Affair.
Meanwhile Dukakis was charged with
wanting to cut back on the number of
guns owned by citizens of the United
States.
The question derived from this is do
we want a president who will limit the
number ofweapons in this country, or do
we want a president who will sell them to
hostile third world nations?
It’s up to the people to decide what
kind of president they want. The nega
tive campaigning is here to stay. Proof of
this is Dukakis, who tried to win the
election without it, but was unsuccessful.
As long as it will win the election, it
doesn’t matter what kind of picture vot
ers have of the other guy.
The people need to see through the
negative ads and see what the candidate
stands for, rather than believe what his
opponent says he stands for. They will
have another chance to do that in four
years,

HAS NOT TAKEN
I am writing in regard to an article
Michael Walker wrote in the November
9 issue of Hie. Print (“Andre returns
from sabbatical in Wales”). I recently:
spent a year studying Celtic History in
the town of Carmarthen, Wales (near
Mumbles where Ms. Andre studied) and
while there learned quite a bit about thé
country of Wales.
There is no such place as “South
Wales, England;’’ England, Wales, and
Scotland are separate countries which
together comprise Great Britain. (This
is, by the way, a very sensitive issue for
Welshmen and Scots alike ~ there is
quite a bit of tension between these two
countries and England). Also/*Welch”
is a grape juice — I believe Ms. Andre
conducted interviews with the faculty in
the Welsh department.
I admit that before going to Wales,
my knowledge of the country was rather
limited also. Hopefully the information
I have provided will be helpful for you
and your readers. Diolch yn fawr! (Thank
you - in Welsh).
