Borrelli Sports Editor The Clackamas men’s, and women’s cross country team, hoping to remain a state and northwest power have gotten underway, and are off to a flying start. The women finished first in the community college divi sion, and four members of the team brought home individual awards. Karin Merritt, Angie Wright, and Karmay Bond were in the top five in the 14-19 age division. Even with the great showing in Nevada, the best was yet to come for Coach Mike Hodges, and his team, as they won the Clackamas invitational 35 to 36 over Bellvue. “That was the most sig nificant performance by a women’s team at Clackamas this decade,” Hodges said. With the big victory, Clackamas claimed wins over Lane, and Mt Hood. A pair of tough league foes according to Hodges. “I was pleased. It was a solid victory over Lane, and Mt Hood. Our girls are really going to be competitive,” Hodges said. Although Hodges is not exactly blessed with experience, he makes up for that with many talented women, and hard work. Five of the seven women roster is made up with freshman. Dusty Moore, Nick Barger, and Mike Paulson appear to be the main three men for Clacka mas this season. Barger finished sixth in the Clackamas Invita tional, Moore was ninth, and Paul son came in eleventh in Clacka mas third place finish. The third place finish is not be a reflection on the men’s season this year. Some key in jures have hurt the Cougars. Ryan Burco a Sophomore, men’s cap tain is bothered by a knee injury, and had to drop out of the race satuiday.
