FEATURE THE PRINT October 5,1988 Page 3 Services offered to ease college life By Caree Hussey Feature Editor For those of you who are new to the college, or even those of you who weren’t aware of it; there are many services provided on campus designed to make your life here easier. Did you forget that mom’s birthday was today? Then head over to the bookstore where you’ll find greeting cards, some with potpourri and seeds in them. Although the bookstore carries all the textbooks you’ll ever need, they also stock other items. There is candy for that quick energy boost as well as aspirin for your pounding headache. Also on hand are surgical gloves, bandage scis sors, wrapping paper, study aids, subliminal tapes and official CCC sweatshirts. Some of the more unusual items include tool bits for machinists and electric eras ing machines. Do you need a job to help pay for your education. Do you want full time, part time or tem porary? The place to go is the Career and Job Development Center located in the Commu nity Center. They have a wealth ■of information on careers as well. ¡There are books on career and job search information, how to do resumes and how to survive interviews. You can even do a mock interview and have it vide otaped there, in order to improve your techniques. There are books filled with job openings from em ployers in the area. You can use one of the three computers by appointment, two of the programs are designed for people who have an idea of what they want to do, and the other is designed for people who aren’t sure just yet. Also by appointment, you can get help writing up your resume. There are video tapes on job search and interview techniques as well as interviews with people in the field. If you are interested in working for a particular com pany, you can find files on it and other companies in the Career and Job Development Center. Are you getting stressed out ? You can find a number of dif ferent games to take your mind off things in the Game Room in the Community Center. The Learning Center in Bar- low offers assistance in many different areas. Free tutoring is available for all enrolled students in subjects ranging from the ABCs through Zoology. You don’t have to be in remedial classes to get help. If you want to become a tutor so you can help fellow students while earning some extra money you can, provided you meet the requirements. For more in formation on getting tutorial help or becoming a tutor, contact Judy Peabody in the Learnirig Center. Also in the Learning Center, there are classes for people who want to get their GED certificate. Students who are enrolled in college classes can earn their GED at the same time. You can also earn an Adult High School Di ploma, which is a regular high school diploma issued through CCC. This program is designed especially for adults, and can also be earned while .taking regular college classes. There are regional night high school classes offered through the college for students who work during the day. For more information on GED and AHSD programs contact Carol Evans. Also offered are English as a Second Language classes, designed for students whose native language is not English to help them improve their skills. There are students from many different countries participating in this program. For more infor mation on ESL contact Molly Williams.
