Proud year for cross country
As fall draws to a close and
winter enthralls us, the sports
seasons calmly and sometimes
quietly approach.
Once again it’s the end of the
season and Mike Hodges’ cross
country team has qiven the col
lege another state championship
and have provided some thrills
along the way.
Keith Ferrell is the biggest
thrill the team has experienced.
The sophomore turned in some
very impressive times as he won
every race in state competition.
■ Ferrell, who graduated from
Glencoe High School, is bound
to be one of the most recruited
runners in the western junior
college system.

superb times. He turned a time
of 26:53.5 (26 minutes, 53.5
seconds), which was just 2.4
seconds behind Ferrell and was
good enough for second place in
the state championship.
Scott Sheldon and Jerry
Durant, both second year
Cougar runners, also were solid
team members that Hodges
could rely on.
Even a male chauvinist would
be remiss if he did not mention
the women’s team this fall.
Jeanne Barnett was the key
runner for Clackamas this
season. The Molalla sophomore
was consistantly a top finisher
for the Cougar women’s team.

She placed first for Clackamas
with a time of 19:41.2 at the
state meet.
Molly McArtor of Gladstone
and Dena Raddle of Milwaukie
were consistantly top runners
for the Cougars.
Former Clackamas Cross
Country Coach Lori Schutt was
the biggest surprise for the
women. At 45 years of age, she
surprised a lot of people when
she placed second among
Clackamas women at the state
meet.
Yes, the fall sports season is
coming to a close. In its place,
comes a whole new season,
winter. Soon all we will be hear
ing aboutis men and women’s
basketball and wrestling.

In the midst of the cross
country team competing in
Spokane for the NWAACC title
and the Cougar volleyball team
finishing up their season, people
often forget the intramural
competition on campus.
In last Thursday’s champion
ship game for the intramural
football players, the Grave Dig
gers shut out Maximum Over
drive 4-0. It was a fitting ending
to a near perfect season for the
Diggers, whose overall in
tramural record turned out to
be 6-1.
After a 3-0 start in the regular
season, the Diggers were
defeated by the Five Young
Canables 4-1/2. The Canables
finished the season at 3-1, tied
for first place with the Diggers.
Maximum Overdrive was 2-2
