Crue rocks Portland
by Mark Borrelli
Staff Writer
Motley Crue came touring to
Portland, Tuesday, Oct. 13, and
12.000 rock fans showed up to
rock with Vince and the boys.
At least some of them came to
see “Crue,” as they are often
referred to by their fans. Many in
attendance on this Tuesday night
came out to see anextremelyhot
group that was opening for Crue,
Whitesnake.
Whitesnake led by lead singer,
David Coverdale, has been on
top of the singles chart for last
three weeks with their smash hit
“Here I go again.” The group
has also enjoyed success with
their album, appropriately titled
“Whitesnake.” The album has
been number two on the charts
for six consecutive months. With
all this success, one wonders why
they are an opening act. There
album is outselling Crue’s “Girls,
Girls, Girls,” yet. they are
opening.
It turns out that this is one of
those concerts where there really
is no “opener,” Bothgroups are
hot, and neither could be labeled
as the “opener.”
Whitesnake did start the show
however, playing a new one off
of the new album, before playing
the title track off of the “Slide it
in” album. Coverdale then
brought the crowd to their feet
when he played their hit single
“Here I go again.” After playing
for about 45 minutes the first act
normal alotted time, Coverdale
said his thank yous and good
bye’s, and left the stage. Then a
highly unusual thing happened -
an encore call for the opening act.
This is highly uncommon, but
then again usually an opening act
is a group that couldn’t sell an
album at a garage sale.
Whitesnake came back on
stage, and played their version of
“All or Nothing” with a few
modifications. “Thank you
Portland, this is the first time we
ever got a song call,” Coverdale
told the fans before once again
exiting the stage.
Once again, the fans wanted
another encore, trying to en
courage Whitesnake with a
thunderous ovation, but time was
short so they were unable to come
out again, now it was time for the
second half of the act, the hard
rocking Motley Crue.
An elaborate stage, and
lighting system was being used
for Crue’s show, so it took
longer than usual between
shows to set up the stage, but
when the lights went out, the
red curtains around the stage
started to open to the music of
“The Stripper.” When the cur
tains opened, the first thing the
fans Hooked for was the con
traption drummer Tommy Lee
was sitting in. “It came to me in
a dream... a very sick dream,”
Lee explained to the fans during
a drum solo. The sick dream
Lee had was of playing the
drums at diffrent angles, and
upside down. So Lee had his
dream fulfilled when he had the
drum stand made into what
looks like a cage, and hooked
up to a hoist to move it around.
Lee took a big sip of Jack
Daniels, and started the drum
solo, and eventually played up
side down to a loud ovation
from the crowd. Lee also plays
the piano for Crue. Lee also
showed the majority teenage
crowd what a full moon indoors
looks like.
While Lee was playing the
drums, lead singer, Vince Neil
| kept the crowd loud. Neil, with
obscene jestures and his version
of four letter rock, kept the au
dience on their toes. Crue
played songs from all of their
albums, including “Shout at the
devil,” “Girls, Girls, Girls,”
and “Live Wire.” They played
a two encore show, saving
“Girls, Girls, Girls” for their
last encore, when a giant motor
cycle appeared from the back of
the stage, and hundreds of
balloons came drifting down
from the ceiling.
The total show lasted about
three hours and 45 minutes,
with Crue playing about 2 1/2
hours while Whitesnake played
11/2 hours. The concert was a
success, as every one left excited
¡and rock fulfilled. The only
complaint was not seeing
enough Whitesnake, but the
concert was a thumbs up
anyway.

Spingsteen thoughtful on new LP
by E.A. Berg
Staff Writer
Bruce Springsteen released one
of the most focused and
thoughtful albums in recent
memory Oct. 5.
“Tunnel of Love,” Springs
teen’s eighth studio LP, begins a
new chapter: Springsteen with a
commitment.
Those of us with preconceived
notions about what Springsteen’s
follow up to “Bom in the USA”
might be like, should have best
them behind before turning on
the turntable.
Springsteen could have burnt
up the charts with a “Bom in the
feeling a “Nebraska,” but this is
Springsteen as we have never
heard him before.
In many ways “Tunnel of
Love’’ is Springsteen in
autobiographical form - a sort of
fresh composite of his 15 year
recording career.
But this is clearly Springsteen
Album
Review
‘‘Springsteen sings of real
mature love”
‘‘‘Tunnel of Love* has a
bold,
compelling
acoustical feeling”
However, “Tunnel of Love”
includes some of Springsteen’s
best material.
“Walk Like a Man” is
without a doubt the most
thoughtful and emotionally en
during song he’s ever recorded.
Springsteen sings a love song,
not to his wife, but to his father.
“Spare Parts,” “One Step
Up,” and “Two Faces” stand
oüt as the album’s other great
songs.

USA-2.” However, love,
romance, and commitment, not
the soured American Dream, has “Tunnel of Love”: not “Born in
fueled his fiery spirit.
the USA-2. ”
“Tunnel of Love” is about
love - plain and simple. Not the in the present. From the albums
love of getting some girl in the first cut “Ain’t Got You” he
back seat of a car or a pleading of sings, “I’ve been paid a king’s
friendship. Instead, a 38 year-old ransom for doing what comes
married man sings of real mature naturally.”
Marriage is a recurring theme
love and all the happiness and
with references in half of the
despair that goes along with it.
“Tunnel of Love” has the albums 12 songs.
With its dense pop orchestra
same bold, compelling acoustical
tions and Woody Guthrie styled
melodies, the album’s music
makes you feel like you’re in
love.
| The album’s biggest draw back
is lack of the E Street Band. Only
drummer Max Weinberg is to be
heard in more than half of the
songs. Saxaphonist Clarence
Qemons makes only one ap
pearance (as a back up singer in
“When You’re Alone”). Patti
Scialfa is beautiful as a back up in
“One Step Up.”
- ¡1-doubt if any of the album’s
songs will be smash hits, or even
reach the Top Ten.
