Sports ■>*1 Corner by Christopher Curran Sports Editor »4*** For about three months now, I’ve been writing this column on current events in sports, per sonal experiences, and things in general. This week.I would like to try something different. Let’s just pretend that I’m writing to you 10 years ago. At this time of the year the Portland Trailblazers were shock ing the professional basketball world when they beat the Los Angeles Lakers four games to none in the Western Conference Championship and advanced to the National Basketball Associa tion Championship. After the first two games, Portland’s oppo their history to date. In other sports the Oakland nent in the series, the Philadelphia 76ers had a two Raiders sprinted past the Min nesota Vikings 33-14 to win their game lead on the Blazers. Games three and four didn’t first National Football League go Philadelphia’s way. Portland Championship in two tries. In evened the series at two games October of 1976 the Gncinnati apiece. In the fifth game at Reds thrashed the New York Philadelphia, Portland came Yankees four games to none to away with the victory. All the win their second consecutive Blazers needed was one more win world series. Championship teams were not to become world champions. That opportunity came on June the only things happening in 5, 1977. In front of a crowd of 1976-77. Professional sports in over 12,700 people in the rose ci troduced no fewer than four ty, Portland trimmed - teams in that year. In time for the Philadelphia 109-107 to capture 1976 NFL season, Seattle and the only NBA championship in Tampa joined the league with the Seahawks and Buccaneers respec tively. Seattle got a new team in pro fessional baseball as well. Along with the Toronto Blue Jays, the Mariners of Seattle were presented to baseball fans. I hope you’ve enjoyed my little fade back to the past, I’ve had fun going back myself...but I wouldn’t want to stay there. % blaut«#* rVïrf Next week: A look back over this entire school year from a sports editor’s point of view.
